While hailing the introduction of the card reader in the general election, Mark said it added value to the electoral process as it proved to be efficient, effective and result oriented.
According to Leadership newspaper, David Mark said this during his welcome address to senators after the elections and Easter recess adding that he is happy that Nigerians hearkened to the persistent appeals for peaceful and violence free elections.
Senator Mark also commended the maturity and sportsmanship displayed by President Goodluck Jonathan who willingly conceded defeat and congratulated Gen Muhammadu Buhari even before the INEC announced the result.
According to him, that single act saved the country from a possible crisis and catastrophe, adding that the president’s action added value to the consolidation of democracy in the country and raised the benchmark of peaceful democratic transition and consequently set a new democratic template on a continent notorious for its infamous sit-tight leaders.
Mark said ”I also extend my warm felicitation to the President-Elect, Gen Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) GCFR. The President-Elect has extended a hand of fellowship to President Jonathan and his team.
“I would equally like to commend Nigerians for their comportment before, during and after the elections. By this action, we have proved to the world that Nigeria has laid a solid foundation for democracy to thrive.”
Senator Mark also congratulated federal lawmakers who won elections as state governors. He said: “Let me in a similar manner, congratulate our colleagues who won elections as Chief Executives of State Governments. I am sure they will miss these hallowed Chambers and her activities when they assume their new positions.
“Specifically; Senator Atiku Bagudu, Governor-Elect Kebbi State.Senator Jibrilla Bindowo, Governor-Elect Adamawa State.Senator Ben Ayade, Governor-Elect Cross River State. Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, Governor-Elect Delta State.
We also have from the House of Representatives; Rt. Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, Governor-Elect Sokoto State.Rt. Hon. Aminu Masari, Governor-Elect Katsina State; and,Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Governor-Elect Enugu State.
“I urge them to continue to exhibit the highest sense of duty and responsibility anchored on transparency, accountability and honesty which they have demonstrated over the years. These Governors-Elect are our ambassadors in their respective States.
“Also deserving of commendation are two of our colleagues, Senator Ibikunle Amosun and Senator Abiola Ajimobi, re-elected in Ogun and Oyo States respectively. This is a clear demonstration of their hardwork and diligence. ”
David Mark has been listed as one of the power brokers in Nigeria who will lose their influence after the May 29 hand-over date. This is because of his close ties with the incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan.
He will also most likely lose his position as Senate president in Nigeria is due to the fact that the ruling Peoples Democratic Party will move into the opposition as the All Progressive Party (APC) claimed the majority of seats at the just-concluded elections.
There have also been reports that the Benue-born senator’s seat of president of the Senate is being contested by three factions of the APC: the Bola Tinubu faction, the Buhari faction and the Amaechi/Saraki faction.
