Jose Mourinho
Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea departure has been the talk of the footballing world since it was confirmed on Thursday afternoon. The second spell of the Portuguese at the Stamford Bridge was one that created varied opinions and the news of his departure is producing different shades of thoughts.
Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce told Sky Sports on Thursday, “I’m shocked, I have to say. The timing is quite amazing, just a couple of days before the game they’re playing against us, is something I thought wouldn’t happen.
“And at this period of time at Christmas when you’re trying to bring in a manager with all the games, is a strange choice. We don’t know what’s happened, what’s gone on, but we have to face Chelsea on Saturday and try to get a result.”
The decision of Chelsea management to axe the ‘Special One’ may have come as a shock to Allardyce, but former Nigerian captain Chief Segun Odegbami has not taken it in the same way. Indeed, he added a different dimension to the talk when he spoke with our correspondent.
He said, “I’m looking at the issue from a technical point of view. For what happened in Chelsea the past few months was more of spiritual rather than being technical. It was a contest between sheer arrogance and diligence to duty. There was no explanation for what Mourinho did to the team doctor, Eva Carneiro. And since then nothing has been the same with the team.
“They had one of the best collections of players in the world and they were not playing badly but still could not win. How do you explain that? In life humility pays better than arrogance.”
On Nigeria’s Mikel Obi and his future at the club after Mourinho, Odegbami said, “Mikel has some few years left; we have seen his best in the past. I don’t see anything changing there; it’s best for him to move on and enter another phase of life.”
Bournemouth striker Glenn Murray said in shock, “How can you sack Mourinho? If his success doesn’t buy time then no one is safe.”
Chelsea in a statement on their website praised Mourinho for his achievements.
The statement read, “Chelsea Football Club and Jose Mourinho have today parted company by mutual consent. All at Chelsea thank Jose for his immense contribution since he returned as manager in the summer of 2013.
“His three league titles, FA Cup, Community Shield and three League Cup wins over two spells make him the most successful manager in our 110-year history. But both Jose and the board agreed results have not been good enough this season and believe it is in the best interests of both parties to go our separate ways.”
Diezani

There was a growing anxiety among the friends, family and political associates of the immediate past Minster of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, on Thursday as rumours made the round that the ailing minister had died on Thursday.
The fact that Alison-Madueke is being treated for cancer in the United Kingdom heightened the rumour as many reports on the social media reported her death.
However, her lawyer, Mr. Oscar Onwudiwe, debunked the rumour of the former Minister’s death.
When contacted on the telephone, he said, “It’s not true.”
The United Kingdom National Crime Agency had in October 2 arrested the former minister over allegation of corruption and released her on bail
Meanwhile, a human rights activist and Executive Director, Women’s Consortium of Nigeria, Mrs. Olabisi Olateru-Olagbegi, died of cancer on Wednesday at the age of 62.
The President of Women Arise and Campaign for Democracy, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin, in a series of tweets on her Twitter handle on Thursday, expressed shock over her death.
Gbemisola
The Lagos State Police Command is investigating a case of a 19-year-old girl, Gbemisola, who claimed to have been raped by a university graduate, identified only as Kunle.
Gbemisola told PUNCH Metro that after the rape, Kunle, 24, began to blackmail her, threatening to release her nude photos if she refused to send him some money.
After the victim reportedly yielded to the threat two times, he allegedly demanded another payment of N10, 000.
When Gbemisola refused, the suspect was said to have posted the nude photos on the Internet, including her phone number.
The victim was said to have been called by some of her friends and family members who saw the pictures.
The incident happened in Agiliti Estate, Ketu area of Lagos State.
Afolabi, a caterer, told PUNCH Metro that she met the suspect about three weeks ago.
She said, “I was going home that Friday when he stopped me on the road and said he wanted to be my boyfriend. I told him I was already in a relationship with someone else, and that I was not interested.
“He said he would not mind being a mere friend. We exchanged contacts and I left for my house.
“I always post pictures of my new cakes on Whatsapp and he saw one of them and said he liked it. He said he wanted me to make a cake for him. I agreed.
“He asked where I was and I said I was at my sister’s shop. He said we should meet at the junction because the cake he wanted was on his phone and he would want to show me what he wanted.”
She explained that when they met, the suspect claimed to have forgotten the phone at his parent’s home in Agiliti Estate, and asked her to follow him home.
She alleged that no sooner had they got to the house than Kunle locked the door and raped her.
“I blamed myself for my predicament and I decided to bear the shame in silence.
“However, on Monday, which was three days after the rape, he called me, saying if I refused to meet him, I would regret it because he had my nude photos and he would post them on the Internet.
“I begged him and he said I should send him a N1,500 recharge card, which I did. Two days later, he demanded another N2, 000 recharge card, and I sent it.
“Later, he said I should send him N10,000. I was angry and dared him to do whatever he wanted to do.”
Gbemisola, who finished secondary school last year, said she was surprised when she saw her nude photos, with her phone number, on the Internet.
She said the incident had affected her psychologically.
The victim’s sister, Ramota, said she got to know about the incident from a family friend who saw the nude pictures.
She said, “My younger sister said she saw Gbemisola’s nude photos on someone’s phone. I was told she wanted to hurt herself due to the shame and disgrace it had brought on her.
“I followed some other family members to Kunle’s parents’ house and they promised to make him delete the photos. But we never knew the photos had gone viral.”
It was learnt that the case was first reported at the Lagos State Office of the Public Defender, before a community leader, Yomi Odegbami, took the matter to the Ketu Police Station.
Odegbami asked the government to bring the culprit to justice to serve as a deterrent to others.
“The police and the government should urgently wade into this case before other young girls fall victim of this wicked man,” he said.
Kunle, when contacted by our correspondent denied the allegation, saying he was in a relationship with Gbemisola.
He said the nude photos were not circulated by him, adding that the 19-year-old originally sent the photos to him during their conversation on Whatsapp.
He said, “I am a graduate of a private university in Osun State and I know what I am doing. We met a few weeks ago and we started chatting on Whatsapp. I asked her to send me some of her pictures when she travelled to Ondo, and she said, ‘Is it my breasts?’, and I said yes.
“After that, I asked for the pictures of her private parts, and she sent them to me. I did a picsmix of the photos and jokingly sent it to her. I have since deleted the photos from my phone. The only regret I have was that I showed them to my friends.
“The first time she visited me, we didn’t do anything. It was the second time she came that we made love. I have all our chats as evidence that she sent those pictures to me.
“She came with her relatives to my house and damaged my laptop which I bought for over N90,000 and now, they are going to the press. I know my rights and if this is the way they want it, no problem.”
The Police Public Relations Officer, Joe Offor, said he would call back, but he had yet to do so as of the time of filing this report.

Fiery Catholic priest and the Spiritual Director of the Adoration Ministry in Enugu, Rev.-Father Ejike Mbaka, on Friday met behind closed-door with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Mbaka stirred controversy earlier in the year when he delivered a message that former President Goodluck Jonathan would fail in the presidential election.
He had said that the Holy Spirit told him Jonathan was not favoured to continue as President going by the state of the Nigerian economy and widespread insecurity, which he had failed to contain.
The clergyman who was accompanied by four men met with Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

A Magistrate Court sitting in Abuja on Wednesday, December 16, discharged the cases against the director of the Indigenous People Of Biafra Nnamdi Kanu.
UPDATE!
According to Vincent Obette, Namdi Kanu’s lawyer, the director of Radio Biafra and the leader of the separatist Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) has not yet been released from custody.
“Mr. Kanu has been discharged but not released from custody. There are no legal charges on his neck anywhere in the world,” he said.
The lawyer also added that  there will be another court hearing on a related matter tomorrow at the Federal High Court in Abuja, where they “hope to conclude the matter.”
Earlier today at the ruling the chief magistrate, Shuaibu Usman struck out all criminal charges levelled against Kanu.

Usman said that since the State Security Services (SSS) through its lawyer Moses Idakwo had filed for a discontinuation of the case, the accused is thereby discharged.

Citing section 108 of the Administration of the Criminal Justice Act, he said the case is struck out due emerging facts by the prosecutor on the matter under investigation.
On Monday, November 23, the SSS had filed an application for the discontinuation of the case against Kanu.
Idakwo during his submissions said the facts emerging from ongoing investigation by his client – the SSS – show that the case against the Biafra agitator cannot be entertained by the magistrate court.
He said that the magistrate court lacked the jurisdiction to handle such case.
Following his arrest,  he was arraigned by the SSS before chief magistrate Usman.
But during the trial process,  the SSS obtained an order from the Federal High Court to keep Kanu in their custody for a period of 90 days.
This the SSS said will enable it conduct investigation on Kanu following allegations of terrorism and terrorism funding.
But in an objection, Kanu’s counsel, Egechukwu Obetta also applied to the same Federal High Court presided by Ademola Adeniyi to revoke the order it had given to the SSS.
He said the prosecutor had fraudulently obtained the order during an ongoing trial of the accused person at the magistrate court. Adeniyi is expected to rule on the matter on Thursday, December 17.
Kanu has also asked the court to strike out the criminal charge with reference number FHC/ABJ/ CS/873/2015 levelled against him by the SSS.
Recall that a statement published on the website of Radio Biafra on Saturday, October 17, disclosed the by the Department of State Services (DSS) as soon as he got to Nigeria from the United Kingdom... need complete website click here:.http://WomVegas.com/profile.php?id=75170

PARIS (AP) — French far right leader Marine Le Pen on Thursday took down a tweet showing the execution of American reporter James Foley after his family protested — but left up two other gruesome images of violence by Islamic State extremists.
Far Right National Front party leader Marine Le Pen leaves after the results of the second round of the regional elections in Henin-Beaumont, northern France. A French court on Tuesday Dec.15, 2015 acquitted Marine Le Pen of incitement to hatred, a charge leveled after she compared Muslim street prayers to a foreign occupation
French authorities are investigating the tweets, which Le Pen posted in response to a journalist who made an analogy between her anti-immigration National Front party and the Islamic State group. Le Pen was trying to show the difference between the two but the effort backfired, drawing widespread condemnation, and the interior minister accused her of fomenting Islamic State propaganda.
Foley's mother Diane said on French radio RTL on Thursday that the tweets "add to the family's pain." The family issued a statement saying, "We are deeply disturbed by the unsolicited use of Jim for Le Pen's political gain" and want the photos taken down "immediately."
Soon afterward, Le Pen's tweet disappeared. However, two other tweets with images of IS executions remained visible on her Twitter account. Party spokesman Alain Vizier would not comment on why Le Pen took down the Foley photo.

BRUSSELS (AP) — The latest news on the mass movement of asylum-seekers and migrants to Europe, including developments from an EU summit where leaders are discussing the issue. All times local.
A family disembarks from a boat of Frontex, European Border Protection Agency, at the port town of Petra, on the Greek island of Lesbos, on Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2015. Greek authorities say two people have drowned and 83 others have been rescued after a wooden boat crammed with refugees sank in the Aegean Sea off the eastern Greek island of Lesbos.
11:35 a.m. European Union leaders are converging on Brussels for an end-of-year summit focused on tackling Europe's migrant crisis and other issues. On the first day of their two-day summit starting Thursday, EU leaders will examine a controversial plan from the European Commission to set up a new border and coast guard agency with powers to unilaterally deploy guards to countries in trouble.
The plan appears likely to face opposition by southern European nations hardest hit by the arrival of hundreds of thousands of migrants to Europe this year, including Greece and Italy.

LONDON (AP) — Europe in 2015 witnessed the greatest movement of people since World War II, as desperate refugees fleeing Middle East violence arrived by the hundreds of thousands on its shores. The continent also suffered extremist attacks that exposed the vulnerability of its civilians and challenged its way of life.

Models display creations by designer Anya Hindmarch during the Autumn/Winter 2015 show at London Fashion Week in London
Africa suffered devastating attacks as well but also welcomed Pope Francis with joy. As the tumultuous year draws to a close, The Associated Press is looking back on 12 months of upheaval in Europe and Africa by presenting the most memorable images by AP photographers. These stories highlight how interconnected the world has become, with Europe facing grave challenges stemming in large part from unrest in the Middle East.
Deadly attacks on Paris touched a global nerve — in January with the slaughter at the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo, and in November with coordinated attacks in Paris that claimed 130 lives and wounded hundreds. But there were major extremist attacks elsewhere as well — in Nigeria, Tunisia, Turkey and other countries.
Memorable —and often painful — images came from other tragedies, including a plane crash in the French Alps, a deadly fire in a Romanian nightclub and a political assassination in Moscow. The migration crisis produced some of the most iconic images of the year along the hazardous journey toward northern Europe. Some refugees exulted in their survival, raising their arms in joy and relief when their flimsy rafts made landfall in Europe. Others drowned in the sea, including 3-year-old Aylan Kurdi, whose lifeless body was photographed after washing up on a Turkish beach and galvanized the world's horror at the unfolding crisis.
These photographs show a Europe that is both less isolated and more vulnerable, its borders elastic, its control mechanisms threatened, its capitals both defiant and fearful.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A Seoul court on Thursday acquitted a Japanese reporter of defaming South Korea's president by reporting that she was spending time with a man during a deadly ferry disaster last year.
Japanese reporter Tatsuya Kato of Sankei Shimbun newspaper arrives at the Seoul Central District Court in Seoul, South Korea, Thursday, Dec. 17, 2015. The Seoul court acquitted Kato on Thursday of defaming South Korea's president by reporting that she was spending time with a man during a deadly ferry disaster last year.
The ruling by the Seoul Central District Court comes as President Park Geun-hye faces criticism that she has clamped down on journalists. The case has been seen as a test of free speech as opponents say government attacks on personal and political liberties are growing.
Prosecutors last year indicted Tatsuya Kato of Japan's conservative Sankei Shimbun newspaper over an article that listed rumors that Park was absent for seven hours during the disaster that killed more than 300 people, mostly teenagers. Prosecutors, who previously requested an 18-month prison term, have one week to appeal the ruling.
In a press conference, Kato described the acquittal as a "due verdict" and said he hopes prosecutors will not appeal. He said his story on Park's whereabouts during the ferry disaster serves the public interest.
South Korea's Foreign Ministry said earlier Thursday that it had asked the Justice Ministry to consider Japan's request for leniency on Kato. Despite the acquittal, South Korea's criminal defamation law should be repealed because it "stifles a free press, has a chilling effect on freedom of expression and works against the public interest by gagging critics and whistle blowers," Phil Robertson of Human Rights Watch said in a statement.
Park's government came under massive public criticism for its botched rescue operation during the ferry disaster. South Korean media have also questioned whether Park was unaccounted for on the day of the sinking in April 2014.
The headline of Kato's report, which cited financial industry rumors, parliamentary debates and the leading conservative South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo, said: "President Park Geun-hye was missing on the day the passenger ship sank. Who was she meeting?" The article repeated rumors in South Korean media and the financial industry "about a relationship between the president and a man" said to be married at the time.
Park's office has said she wasn't with the man in question, a former adviser. Kato's case was watched by many in South Korea and Japan as the Asian neighbors struggle to mend ties frayed over historical and territorial issues.
Many South Koreans still resent Japan's harsh colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula from 1910 to 1945. Ties between the countries have worsened since the 2012 inauguration of hawkish Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who many South Koreans see as trying to whitewash Japan's colonial and wartime abuses.
Kato's paper, the Sankei Shimbun, is reviled by some South Koreans for its right-leaning editorial stance. More generally, there is growing dissatisfaction with Park in South Korea, although she still has a strong base of loyal, conservative supporters. Hundreds plan to march Saturday in Seoul against her, the latest in a series of mass protests against the government in recent months.
Demonstrators have a diverse set of grievances against Park, including her conservative policies in labor, trade and education.
