The Nigerian Union in South Africa said on Saturday that Nigerians lost more than 4.6 million Rand (N84 million) to xenophobic attacks.

The President of Nigerian Union in South Africa, Mr Ikechukwu Anyene, told NAN on phone from Pretoria, South Africa, that the losses were initially put at 1.2 million Rand ( N21 million).

“The Nigerian Union in South Africa has completed documentation of the losses suffered by Nigerians to xenophobic attacks.

“Nigerians lost more than 4.6 million Rand or N84 million during the attacks.

“A mechanic workshop owned by a Nigerian in Jeppes, near Johannesburg, for example was completely burnt with 11 cars inside it.

“The loss is put at more than one million Rand or N20 million,” he said.

Anyene said the Union had compiled the losses and given the list to Nigeria’s Consul-General to South Africa.

He said Nigerian victims of the attacks needed urgent assistance to re-settle because many had lost their means of livelihood.

“The Consul-General has travelled to Nigeria and we appeal to the Federal Government to do something urgent to assist Nigerians affected by the attacks.

“We have made representations to the Federal government.

“We are also hoping that working with the South African government, there will be a way to compensate the affected Nigerians so as to enable them go back to their normal lives.

“The tension is less now. The South African government has come out in full force to check the attacks,” he said.

Anyene said the losses suffered by Nigerians were in the form of vandalised mechanic workshops, burnt mechanic workshops, looted shops as well as stolen and burnt cars.

“More than 50 Nigerians were displaced during the attacks. The Union has assisted them to return home.

“The Union is also planning to assist a family to move to a new accommodation because the present home is not safe,” he said.

He said the Union carried out a proper documentation of the attacks, with pictures and other relevant documents stored to capture the incidents.

Topic: Ex- Infinity Member Twin Sister, Kenny K'ore Kidnapped N5M Demanded as Ransom

The twin sister of  Kenny K'ore, a gospel artist, has been kidnapped! Taiwo Oluwatoyin Akinbode (pictured above) traveled to Port Harcourt, Rivers State on Friday, April 16 for a job prospect when she fell into the well-set trap of the kidnappers. A ransom of N5m is being demanded from the family for her release.
It was a well-laid job opportunity scam on the internet that attracted Taiwo to PH - and her current ordeal. A source close to the family claimed Taiwo's two phones had gone quiet, except when the brother was called to make ransom demands. On a number of occasions, the unfortunate woman was heard wailing for help as she was apparently being tortured. The family has contacted the police in Lagos, and PH, the Anti-kidnapping unit in Lagos and PH, SSS, NIA, AIG, and IG's office, but all have proved abortive The family is now asking that well meaning Nigerians support Kenny, and his family in prayers, and in anyway possible to get his sister back safe and sound. This article titled Nigeria’s Next Leader’s Ties to a Heroin Ring by Daily Beast‘s Michael Weiss is bound to ruffle a few feathers.

In the article, Weiss alleges that Bola Tinubu was involved in some heroin trafficking activities 20 years ago, and other fraudulent endeavors.

Here are some excerpts from the article:

Nigeria’s election last month was celebrated as an unlikely victory for democracy in an African country with a tenuous record of free and fair representation. But the man most responsible for midwifing General Muhammed Buhari’s ballot triumph over current President Goodluck Jonathan has a spotty CV. Former Lagos provincial governor Bola Tinubu, affectionately nicknamed the Jagaban, is today seen as a shrewd if not “deeply Machiavellian” Svengali in Nigeria’s politics as well as the architect of a hugely successful anti-corruption platform. But 20 years ago he had to forfeit nearly half a million dollars to the U.S. Treasury Department after being named as an accomplice in a white heroin-trafficking and money-laundering ring that stretched from West Africa to the U.S. Midwest.

Although his case has been bandied about the Nigerian press for years, Tinubu’s involvement in a federal drug and racketeering investigation waged jointly by the DEA, FBI, and IRS has gone unreported elsewhere, even after his ascendance to Karl Rove-like status last month. A recent gauzy Financial Timesprofile of him, for instance, neglected to mention that two decades ago Tinubu was identified as a bagman for two Nigerian heroin movers who operated out of Chicago and Hammond, Indiana. They were Adegboyega Mueez Akande and Abiodun Agbele, Akande’s nephew, who was exposed to law enforcement after selling white heroin first to Lee Andrew Edwards, another dealer later jailed for trying to murder a federal agent, and then to an undercover cop.

In a 1993 court docket from the U.S. District Court in the Northern District of Illinois, which The Daily Beast obtained from Sahara Reporters, a Nigeria-focused news outlet, IRS Special Agent Kevin Moss said that Akande had run the white heroin ring in the late 1980s until 1990, when he handed off the U.S arm of the business to his nephew, who had arrived in 1988. Akande then returned to Nigeria but continued to oversee the operation from abroad with the help of others at home and in the United States, including his relatives. One of the individuals identified in his cartel by Moss was Tinubu, then a Chicago State University-educated accountant working as a treasurer for Mobil Oil Nigeria Ltd, a subsidiary of energy giant Mobil Oil, which was still a few years shy of its famous merger with Exxon in 1999.

In the biography section of his official website, Tinubu is described as having emigrated to the United States in 1975 “in search of the proverbial Golden Fleece with a heart brimming with unrelenting determination to achieve his visions.” This is certainly one way to describe his tenure stateside.

In 1989, Moss said in an affidavit, Tinubu established an individual money market account, into which he deposited $1,000 in traveler’s checks, and a negotiable order of withdrawal account (NOW) at First Heritage Bank in Country Club Hills, Illinois. The address Tinubu gave the bank was the same as the listed headquarters of Globe-Link International, the front company owned by Akande and his relatives.

Bank employees told Moss that Akande had personally introduced them to Tinubu in December 1989 when who also opened a joint checking account with his wife, Oluremi Tinubu, who already kept a joint account with Akande’s wife at First Heritage. Five days after the NOW account was opened, $80,000 was wired into it from a bank in Houston maintained by one of Akande’s relatives. Tinubu would later use the NOW account to buy a $10,000 Certificate of Deposit for an $8,000 car loan, listing Akande as his cousin on the application.

At the time, Tinubu’s take home as a Mobil Oil Nigeria executive was a mere $2,400 a month and he claimed not to have any other revenue streams. Yet he still managed to deposit $661,000 into his individual money market account in 1990 and then another $1,216,500 a year later. He also opened more accounts with Citibank in its worldwide personal banking unit, transferring over half a million dollars from his First Heritage money market account into one of them in early 1991

Mobil Oil Nigeria told Moss that Tinubu’s role at the company never involved transferring large sums of money between banks and that it didn’t keep deposits in any institutions in the south suburbs of Chicago, where First Heritage was based. Moreover, although Tinubu moved back to Nigeria in 1983, he neglected to file U.S. income tax returns after 1984 despite having sizable, interest-generating deposits in American banks. All of this was enough to persuade a magistrate judge of the Northern District to issue seizure warrants for Tinubu’s First Heritage and Citibank accounts. Collectively, more than $1.4 million belonging to the Nigerian was confiscated.

Tinubu gave differing accounts for his wealth to Moss. In one phone call from Nigeria, shortly after the U.S. Treasury seized his money, he admitted to wiring $100,000 to Akande’s Houston bank account and to receiving the $80,000 from Akande into his First Heritage account. Tinubu also said that apart from one other account in Fairfax, Virginia, he had no other money stashed in U.S. banks.

Except that there were other accounts. Citibank has a worldwide banking division known as Citibank International where Tinubu stashed an additional $550,000. He also controlled an entity called Compass Finance and Investments Company Ltd., of which Akande and Agbele were directors. Still another nexus of money transfers was uncovered by federal investigators, with cash moving from First Heritage to Citibank to Citibank International, where it wound up in Tinubu’s personal accounts and in those belonging to Compass Finance and Investments. In a follow-up exchange with law enforcement officers, Tinubu changed his story. Just days after conceding that he’d sent and received money to and from Akande, he insisted that he had no financial or business dealings with Akande or Agbele.

There’s no evidence that Tinubu was ever indicted for any crime. He eventually settled with the district court, turning over $460,000 of the seized $1.4 million, with the remainder released back to him. The Beast tried repeatedly to contact Marsha McClellan, the U.S. attorney who prosecuted the case, but was unsuccessful.

“I’m not surprised at all,” said Virginia Comolli, a specialist on Nigeria and author of Boko Haram: Nigeria’s Islamist Insurgency. “There’s a trend of various Nigerian politicians at the highest levels involved in dodgy business deals around the world, in property and cash. Even ones who seem fairly clean turn out to have some dark histories.” The perfect case in point is Tinubu’s political project and new president-elect of Nigeria, General Muhammed Buhari, who in 1983 helped overthrow a democratically elected government in a military coup d’etat on the grounds that the government was undisciplined and corrupt. “He resorted to brutal methods, beating up people for not queuing properly and imposing limitations on the media,” Comolli said. “I think a lot of the votes Buhari got were anti-Jonathan rather than pro-Buhari.”

But no doubt, many also came from a savvy fusion of political factions. In February 2013, Tinubu successfully merged his own influential Action Congress party with Buhari’s Congress for Progressive Change, resulting in the All Progressives Congress. The marriage united Nigeria’s most populous northwest and southwest regions and the ensuing campaign was billed by Tinubu as a “commonsense revolution” against a corrupt and venal incumbency which, in its five years in power, had seen the terrorist group and newly-minted ISIS affiliate Boko Haram thrive. Buhari swept the election with 2.7 million more votes than Jonathan.

Even before that trouncing, however, Tinubu had a relatively positive reputation in Nigeria, according to former U.S. ambassador to Nigeria John Campbell. “He is widely regarded as having been a highly successful governor of Lagos state,” he said. “Together with Tinubu’s handpicked successor, Babatunde Fashola, Lagos has seen dramatic improvements in everything from practical stuff like garbage collection to the collection of taxes and the provision of public services,” Campbell told The Beast. Though even here, the ex-diplomat admits, Tinubu’s good governance has been clouded by controversy. “He established a company to do the tax collecting in return for a cut and, at one point, Tinubu and Fashola appeared to be splitting over the percentage of Tinubu’s cut.”

Drug charges do indeed appear to be the sine qua non for Nigerian high office. The year 1993, when Tinubu’s assets were seized, was a turbulent period for Nigeria following the cancellation of a national election and the establishment of a military dictatorship. Moshood Abiola, the rightful winner of that election, was accused of narcotics trafficking. So too is “Prince” Buruji Kashamu from the People’s Democratic Party, who has faced extradition back to the United States since 1998. Kashamu was indicted by a federal grand jury in Chicago for being the elusive “Alaji,” a globetrotting drug kingpin who smuggled heroin into O’Hare International Airport from Europe and Asia. Piper Kerman, the memoirist who inspired the Netflix series Orange is the New Black, famously worked for Alaji. Kashamu denies the charges and insists that he was purportedly a counterterrorism informant to the U.S. government before and after 9/11, and that the real trafficker was his now-deceased brother.

Despite his party’s general loss to the All Progressives Congress, Kashumu was elected in March as senator of the southwest Ogun state. In what appeared to be a magnanimous gesture to the winner, he took out an advertisement praising Tinubu as a role model. The Jagaban was distinctly unimpressed. He trashed the comparison in a statement signed by his media adviser, claiming that for Kashamu “to liken himself to Bola Tinubu is for a small rut to call itself a mountain.” Tinubu instructed the “false praise singer” to go face the music in the Windy City before deigning to talk to him.

The President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari has barred the  African Independent Television ( AIT) from covering his engagement until issues of ethics and standards are sorted out.

It was learnt that Buhari gave the directives through his security team, which asked the AIT crew to leave the Defence House during the visit of the Cuban Ambassador to him.

Although the station was informed politely by one of the officials, the crew refused to leave the venue.
Reacting to the incident, the APC Presidential Campaign Organisation Spokesperson, Mallam Garba Shehu disclosed to the media that what gave rise to the measure was concerns over security and ethical standards which members of the family of the Presidnt- elect raised.

He said: “AIT has been asked to stay aside based on security and family concerns. In addition, Gen Buhari has decided that they will have to resolve some issues relating to standard and ethics.

“We will be talking with them to try and resolve the matter but for now the station has been asked to stay aside because like I said there are some family and security concerns. They have been asked to step down their coverage until we resolve the matter with them on ethics and standards”.

However, Shehu said it is not true  that the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) has been bared along with the AIT,
According to him, the NTA crew are free to attend the events of the President-elect and to cover them accordingly.

When asked whether he should be quoted, Shehu said: “Yes you can quote me that I said that we have asked them to step aside and that we  are resolving the the issues of ethics and standards with them”.

It would be recalled that Buhari and APC had raised the issue of hate campaign against the AIT  during the presidential election campaign.

When Dorcas Shola Fapson hit the screen in the last season of MTV Base series, Shuga, many viewers saw her as a bubbly personality.

She played the role of Sophie, a university student who had a sugar daddy (dating an older man) and loved to party. Her character was undeniably one of the most loved. However, the British-born actress who has a degree in Criminology said it was just a role.
In a new interview with The Nation, the beautiful actress reveals her impressions of Nollywood, and how far she would go to interpret a role, among other things. Read excerpts below:
Who is Sophie in Shuga?
Last season, Sophie was a ‘runs’ babe and she was a very outgoing, fun, bubbly, no-filter kind of girl. She just did what she wanted, not caring who it affected or how it affected anyone. She lived a carefree life. As a ‘runs’ babe, she was well-off. This season, Sophie is a lot more mature. She is determined to be a better person. She is working, making her own money. So, she is no longer a ‘runs’ babe, and has transitioned from being a ‘runs’ babe to a working lady; and a kind of mentor to her younger sister.

So, how much of Dorcas is Sophie?
I think this season, Sophie is a lot more like Dorcas because she is working, focused, and is very on-point with her sex life. I feel like, last season, we were very different because she was a ‘runs’ babe, sleeping with anybody who could pay her rent, or school fees, or buy her a nice bag. So, I feel like this season, Dorcas and Sophie are very similar because, like I said, Sophie is very hardworking this season, and she is an independent person, rather than relying on men to pay for her.

So, what has been the experience on the Shuga set?
Hmmm. It’s been fun. Last season was really fun with the cast and everybody. This season is fun again with the new and old cast. And also, on and off set, we’re all cool together. They’re amazing actors and actresses.
Did Shuga give you your first major role?
Yes, Last season on Shuga was my TV debut; my first on-screen role, and break-in into the industry.
Aside from Shuga, what have you done?
I’m working on a few things. At the moment I’m not allowed to talk about it because the press release is not out yet.
I Can Go Nude In A Movie - Dorcas Shola Fapson
Dorcas Shola Fapson
So, how has the entertainment industry been for you?
It’s been crazy because Sophie has a lot of fans, so I get stopped a lot for pictures, and also get loads of messages from Instagram and Twitter from all over, saying that they admire my work. And it’s just been really crazy and it’s been a lot of love from a lot of people I don’t even know. I’ve received so much love and encouragement from people. So, it’s been really good.
The main aim of Shuga is to pass the message of being careful with sex to youths. How much do you think the modern-day youth is taking all that?
I think that they are taking it really well because Shuga is not just one of those preachy shows. It’s educative, and entertaining at the same time. I feel that with characters like Sophie, a lot of young people identify with her. They’re probably doing the same things Sophie does. So they relate to her. And seeing what Sophie goes through will maybe trigger somebody like Sophie to be more careful. A lot of people identify with different characters in Shuga. That’s why they relate to it and they put it into their own lives and probably practice same. They’re wiser now because they don’t want to go through what Sophie went through.

What’s one of the weirdest things you’ve had to deal with because you play Sophie?
I get a lot of older guys thinking I’m like that in real life, trying to pass me their cards and so on. In my hotel, they’d be like, ‘my room is this, this, that, come and see me’. I’m just like. ‘I’m Dorcas, not Sophie’.
Are you in a relationship?
No, I’m single at the moment.
Why?
I’m really focused on my career at the moment, and I don’t have time for side-lines or distractions. But if it happens, it happens. I’m not totally against it. I’m just very focused on my career.
What was growing up like for you?
I was born and raised in the UK; in London. I grew up with my dad after my mum passed away. I studied before I started acting. I started acting two years ago and prior to that, I was at the university, and have a degree in criminology.
Why did you go into acting with a degree in criminology?
Because acting is something I always wanted to do. But, you know Nigerian parents, they don’t really agree until you start bringing in the money, that’s when they say, ‘oh, acting is great.’ They’d be going like, you should be a doctor, you should be a lawyer, you should be doing this or that. And criminology is something I’m interested in. So, studying Criminology was not just to please my dad, but also about my passion for young people, especially young offenders rehabilitating young offenders. Even now, I work with a lot of young offenders, so, it goes hand in hand.

How do you work with young offenders?
In London, I work with London Probation. They work with young people who have just come out of prison helping them get back to work or education or extracurricular activities. So, I help with drama, I might teach an acting class or help fix their CV; stuff like that.
So, have you now dumped criminology for acting?
No, I will never dump criminology for acting. I will always want to intertwine the two. Like my ten year plan is to, have a drama school that caters to young people from inner city neighbourhood (poor backgrounds); where young people tend to commit more crimes because they have no money, they have no aspiration, or hope. So, I would want to have a drama school for people that have been in trouble or from poor backgrounds.
Was it because of this production you came into Nigeria?
It was. I don’t live in Nigeria. I live in London but I shuttle back and forth to work.
So, when was the first time you visited Nigeria?
The first time I ever came to Nigeria was when I was 14 years old and I stayed for a while. And the second time was when I came to shoot Shuga.
How old were you when your mother passed on?
I was 14.
Was it after your mum`s death you first visited Nigeria?
So, compared to your first set of memories, how do you see Lagos now?
When I was young, I didn’t like it at all. But now I love it. I love how it is developing. I love the entertainment industry, the music, everything. I love it. I like London but I love Lagos.
You must be aware that Nollywood is growing globally; do you have role models in the industry?
I do. I know Genevieve is like my big sister in London. I know that’s a bit of a cliché, everybody is supposed to say Genevieve, Genevieve, Genevieve. But even when I was in London, I used to watch her and be like, ‘I want to be like her.’ I identify with her. I really admire her work. She’s one of my icons.
So, would you do an ‘Aba’ movie when it comes?
It depends on the script. I’m not completely anti-Nollywood. I’m not sold on Nollywood though, so, I’m not, ‘oh, I want to be a Nollywood actress’. My end goal, to be honest, is Hollywood. I kind of fell into it coming to Nigeria, it wasn’t in my plan at all. But like you said, Nollywood is a fast growing industry, and it is developing very well. If the right script comes along, then definitely, I would do it. Unfortunately, there are a lot of silly scripts. I want to be respected for my work. I don’t want be to watch a movie I did and just be like ‘arrgh, this is a terrible production’. I want to be in good quality productions. So, if the script makes sense and the production is well-funded, then definitely.
Is it that you consider most of the scripts coming out of Nigeria as ‘not making sense’?
No, not at all. Like I said, if the script is right, then I would do it. There are quite a number of great Nollywood films like Last Flight To Abuja. That was an amazing script and it was shot amazingly. So, stuffs like that, I would definitely do. But something shot in somebody’s back room, with a poor script and poor sound, no.
So, what makes a good script for you?
Something that has a beginning and an end. I’ve watched a few Nollywood films and quite a number have no meaning; no head or tail, no substance. I like movies that make sense. But Nollywood is developing, so, hopefully, the right script will come along.
How far can you go in interpreting a role? Are there things, for instance, that you would not do?
I feel that as an actress, you have to be open to do anything. I won’t say there is anything I can’t do. With acting, there are lots of camera tricks. So, you might think somebody is sleeping with somebody but they’re not actually doing anything. So, it depends. I wouldn’t completely rule anything out.
Would you go nude for instance?
It depends on the film and the production. For example, in 12 Years A Slave, Lupita went topless. There was nothing wrong with that because that was how slaves were treated in the time. To interpret the role, she had to go topless. Something like that was fine, but if it’s like one… shooting at Surulere, it’s not making sense; of course, I’m not going to go topless because it’s pointless. If I have to do it to interpret my role, well, and of course, if the money is making sense and the production is making sense, then yes, I would do it.
I Can Go Nude In A Movie - Dorcas Shola Fapson
Dorcas Shola Fapson
So, how lucrative has acting been for you?
It’s been amazing for me. It’s been a great journey, it’s been interesting. I’ve really come out of my comfort zone. I’m crawling. You have to crawl before you walk. I’m taking baby steps. I’m getting there.
What advice do you have for people who look up to you?
For people who look up to me, I’ll just advise them to keep pushing, never let anybody tell them they can’t do anything. And if you have a dream, pursue it and just be the best. Hard work and determination will always prevail. Just believe in yourself and PUSH (Pray Until Something Happens).
