XENOPHOBIA: Heartbreaking Photos From South Africa

At least five people have been killed over the past two weeks since local vigilantes in South Africa started looting and attacking shops owned by immigrants mainly from other parts of Africa.
DailyMail reports that in Johannesburg, Malawian immigrant, Samuel Idrssa, described how his friend was stabbed and set on fire by a mob.
‘We wanted to rescue him but there were too many of them,’ he said. ‘It was shocking.’
‘We have all left our homes. Those affected are those of us who live in poor townships because we live with poor South Africans who do not have jobs.’
Violence flared days after Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini said in remarks that foreigners should ‘take their bags and go’. And pictures below capture the horror of what’s currently happening in the country.

Addressing parliament in Cape Town on Thursday, President Zuma had reiterated his condemnation of the violence, calling it a ‘violation’ of South Africa’s values.
No amount of frustration or anger can ever justify the attacks on foreign nationals and the looting of their shops,‘ he said. ‘We condemn the violence in the strongest possible terms. The attacks violate all the values that South Africa embodies.’

South Africans are said to be angry about foreigners in the country because unemployment is high and wealth isn’t distributed equally.
The saga apparently started with the speech by King Goodwill Zwelithini who last month said that foreigners must pack up and leave the country. Soon reports about attacks by locals on immigrants broke out. Ten Nigerians were said to be among those attacked. The king, whose so-called “hate speech” is believed to have incited violence, blamed the media for misinterpreting his words. But it did not help to solve either the international diplomatic conflict, nor the violence on the local level.

President Jonathan Wants A Refund Of His Election Campaign Money

Following the defeat experienced by the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate in the just concluded election, President Goodluck Jonathan has demanded for a refund of his money from both his party and government officials who handled his campaign.
President Jonathan Wants A Refund Of His Election Campaign Money
GOODLUCK EBELE JONATHAN
Punch reports that Jonathan has set up a committee of five to get those concerned with the funds to return them. It was also made known that the president was highly disappointed with the defeat blow despite giving campaign coordinators, ministers, special advisers, close aides and friends, support groups and traditional rulers over N2trn in cash. Most of these people however could not deliver their polling booths and local governments, hence, the defeat.

The President was said to have been further irked by the results of an investigation he ordered. The probe showed that some coordinators used campaign funds to buy very expensive properties, especially in Abuja, and luxury cars. Some of the funds have also been traced to the bank accounts of senior party and government officials who were charged with the disbursement of funds to voters and groups. A reliable source within the Presidency told Punch that one of the President, who recently admitted to a few close aides that it would be difficult to retrieve all the funds, was bent on getting senior party and government officials who received funds to account for all monies collected.
The same source who is a close associate of the president said monies given to traditional rulers in different parts of the country, for example, would not be demanded for. But the source was quick to add that the President was determined to get his ministers, close aides and special advisers to make refunds.
He said, “Some ministers did not get less than N20bn each. None of them can deny it because this fact isn’t hidden within government circles. The only problem with such monies is that there is no receipt to show that they collected money. The sad part is that almost all of them performed woefully. Even in the states where the PDP won, some ministers could not deliver 100,000 votes. They could not mobilise their people to come out. The President is not happy. They all went property and car shopping. This was the most expensive election in the history of this country, yet there was no result.
“The sad part was that even after the President lost on March 28, more money was given to all of them to make up for the dismal outing by winning their states during the April 11 elections. But that turned out to be a bad decision because apart from losing the governorship election, we didn’t perform well at the National Assembly and House of Representatives polls.
“They must give an account of the money since they didn’t use it for the election. The President is not particular about the funds spent on genuine campaign needs like the hiring of jets, advertisements and the rest that also cost billions of naira. His focus is on the individuals that collected billions to deliver their states but couldn’t even win their polling booths.
It was also gathered that apart from the N20bn given to some key ministers and senior special advisers, especially in states where the PDP hoped to capture from the opposition All Progressives Congress, some pro-Jonathan support groups received about N16bn. A former legislator who was to print five million recharge cards, T-shirts and base ball caps has also come under pressure to account for the billions she received because only a few people got the items she was paid to produce. Also, a top female politician in Lagos who got a contract to produce and supply thousands of mobile phones with pro-Jonathan messages was said to have produced just a few, pocketing a large percentage of the funds.

Punch learnt that the funds Jonathan released were disbursed in three phases. Some were released before the March 28 elections, others on the day of the presidential election and more before the April 11 governorship polls. Already, the committee of five has started asking some of the campaign coordinators and ministers who received a minimum of N20bn each to give an account and also refund residual funds where applicable.
However, while a few of the people who received the funds are forthcoming, a large percentage of others are not cooperative, thereby ignoring the committee. President Jonathan is said to be particularly keen on South-West and northern states. In Lagos, a popular PDP chieftain who lost in his polling booth reportedly received $50m in cash a few days before the governorship elections.
A senior PDP party member who spoke to one of our correspondents in Lagos over the weekend confirmed the cash splurge in Lagos. The source said, “Lagos was a show of shame. A few days to the governorship poll, about $150m was received in cash by about five top campaign coordinators. But they failed again, even more than we did in the presidential poll because we lost some areas we won on March 28 to the APC on April 11. They were to share this money to the local governments and the masses.
“Please understand me, I am saying that the sum of $150m was just for the governorship election in Lagos. We are not talking about the sums they got for the presidential election. Only one out of the five people that shared the money gave some of it to local government chairmen. This person disbursed about N2bn. The rest of them sat on the money.
“The coordinator that collected the sum of $50m later went to a Federal Government agency and complained of not having enough funds for the election and got an additional $20m. The story is the same in almost all the South-West especially Oyo, Osun, and the northern states. A female minister from the North, who got the highest amount of funds for that region, lost her state in a shameful manner.”
Confirming that campaign directors in different parts of the country had been asked for an audit, the PDP Campaign Director in Akwa Ibom, Mr. Idongesit Nkanga, said the instruction was not new. He stated that the PDP’s campaign organisation in the state had concluded its audit.
“It is the normal thing. It is the right thing to do for transparency’s sake,” he said. Nkanga however said he would not be able to comment on the refund because he did not collect money from anyone. He said that the PDP’s campaign organisation in Akwa Ibom State received a letter for an audit from the PDP campaign headquarters. He further explained that “because the letter emanated from the national headquarters of the party, they were under obligation to submit the audit report about the campaign’s expenditure to them.”
He maintained that at the campaign headquarters, some of the information was available, adding that he would not be able to give Punch accurate details offhand to avoid possible conflict in the figures. However, when asked what sanctions would be meted out to defaulters, Nkanga said they might be prosecuted.
However, prosecution might be a little difficult because most of the monies disbursed were not receipted. When the national leadership of the ruling PDP was contacted, he said it did not know anything about the money spent on its presidential campaign. The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr. Olisa Metuh, stated this in an interview with one of our correspondents in Abuja on Saturday.
Metuh said only those put in charge of the funds were in a position to account for the monies. He said, “The national leadership of the PDP is not aware of any campaign fund. We were not part of it and therefore we can’t be asked to account for what we didn’t know anything about. “There was a campaign committee and only the committee is in the position to account for any fund.

“It’s been just over six months now but these injuries can be nine months, so I’m really happy that I’m back training.
“I played a few small-sided games last week and Tuesday, and tomorrow I’ll be back in the fold and hopefully I’ll be ready as soon as possible.”

“Not being able to walk slowly in the park with your family and kids to playing with top professionals is a big jump for me and I’m really looking forward to it. That’s what I’ve done for the past 12 years of my life, I got used to it and it was hard to adjust.
“But I’ve got two little kids at home and I’m at a place where I’ve really been looked after well and people want to see to me so those things made the journey back to full fitness a bit easier.”
The manager Mark Hughes added: “Peter has worked extremely hard with our medical staff and is now in a position to join in with the group. It’s fantastic to see him looking so well.”
Odemwingie was expected to miss the whole season at the initial prognosis of the injury but has made a suprise come back and could play this season.

IMF Tasks Nigeria on Fiscal Reforms, Subsidy

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) advises Nigeria to adopt a stringent approach on public spending to ameliorate the adverse effects of plummeting  oil price on the  citizens.
The IMF stated that fiscal prudence and removal of all forms of subsidies often funded with public resources should be among  options left for Nigeria and other oil exporting countries to overcome the threats posed by dwindling crude prices at the international markets.
Christine Lagarde, IMF Managing Director, noted that although the Nigerian government has been talking about economic diversification in the country, the impact remained to be seen on the people and the economy as a whole,  urging the government to take more concrete steps to stem the vulnerability that could arise in the face of the falling oil prices.
Nigeria and other Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) have suffered an over 50 per cent loss  in crude oil prices, thereby affecting budget implementation and other obligations.
The Federal Government late last year rolled out a cocktail of belt-tightening measures aimed at minimising the vulnerability arising from the attendant revenue losses from oil exports.
Such belt tightening measures include surcharges on some luxury consumption, reduction in overseas trainings by government officials, voluntary cut in National Assembly budget, salaries of President Goodluck Jonathan and other top government functionaries as well as State House budget.

Twelve Nigerian and Ghanaian migrants were thrown overboard following a fight concerning their Christian religion, Italian police said yesterday. The police said 15 African Muslim migrants have arrested over the incident. .

The victims were “of Christian faith, compared to their attackers who were of Muslim faith,” police said in a statement, saying the 15 people arrested were accused of “multiple aggravated murders motivated by religious hate”.

The incident aboard the rubber dinghy, which was carrying about 100 migrants, took place in the Strait of Sicily, between Tunisia and Italy.

According to a group of Nigerian and Ghanaian survivors, a fight broke out over religion, with a group of Muslim passengers threatening the Nigerians and Ghanaians after the latter – who were in the minority – declared themselves to be Christians.

“The threats then materialised and 12 people, all Nigerian and Ghanaian, are believed to have drowned in the Mediterranean,” the statement added.

The 15 migrants arrested over the attack on their arrival in Palermo were from Ivory Coast, Mali and Senegal.

In a separate migrant tragedy, as many as 41 migrants were feared drowned after refugee boat sank in the Mediterranean, Italian media reported.

Four survivors reported the incident to Italian police and humanitarian organizations.

The four survivors said they were originally from Sub-Saharan Africa and had left the city of Tripoli in Libya on Saturday. They then stayed adrift for four days before their boat was wrecked, the IOM spokesman said in a statement.

“It appears that the four were found floating in the sea by a helicopter and were then rescued by the military ship Foscari,” the IOM said.

Abdulsalami Calls On Politicians To Maintain Peace

General Abubakar Abdulsalami, the ex-head of state, has called on chieftains of political parties and former candidates to maintain the peace in the country after the 2015 general polls.
Abdulsalami, who is also a leader of the peace committee for the Nigerian general polls, said this in an interview with State House reporters after meeting with the current leader of the country Goodluck Jonathan at Aso Rock.
He said: “You are aware that there are some disturbances in some of the states and of course both the incoming and outgoing presidents have roles to play.
“The chairmen of the various parties have roles to play in order to maintain that peace.”

Explaining why he was visiting Jonathan, Abdulasami said that as the chairman of the peace committee there were always communications between the committee, the president-elect and the head of the country.
The former head of state said the meetings were “in order to ensure that the peace we have been able to get is sustained.
I am here to give him a report of what the committee has been doing.’’
Abdulasami added that the visit was not connected with any matters regarding the petroleum minister, Diezani Allison-Madueke, who was also at the villa at the time.
I think people are just trying to be mischievous; I have been meeting with a lot of people and a lot of ministers in the course of this transition.
So, there is nothing strange in me meeting with anybody. Go through your records to see the number of meetings I have been engaging in.
“I don’t know why the last one will be a subject of media chat.
This is not the first time I have been meeting her (Allison-Madueke), and a number of ministers, so I don’t see what the whole hullabaloo is all about. People are just being mischievous.
Abdulsalami also denied that he was serving as intercessor between Buhari and Jonathan in the transition programme as he was not a member of any of the transition committees.

He said: “I am not serving as intermediary. I told you I am coming here as the chairman peace committee and naturally we have to interact.
“I went to Gen. Buhari and I also saw the President all in an effort to make sure that this transition goes on smoothly and we maintain the peace.”
He said he was grateful to God for the peace achieved during and after elections
“I think we have to thank God in the first place. Secondly, we have to thank President Jonathan for his statesmanship as his actions have really brought peace.
“We also have to thank Buhari for harping on his supporters to tune down their celebrations.”
After the victory of Buhari in the presidential poll, members of the Peace Accord Committee have congratulated Goodluck Jonathan for conceding defeat, and his opponent Buhari on his victory.

Sekem crooner MC Galaxy was attacked and badly injured on Wednesday night April 15th at producer Shizzi's studio in Lekki. According to a reliable industry source, MC Galaxy, Davido (they have collaborated before) B-Red, Shizzi, Davido's driver, a guy named Lati and other HKN members were at Shizzi's studio working and laughing when suddenly things turned ugly.

According to someone who witnessed the beat down, trouble started after MC Galaxy told B-Red that he (Galaxy) was more popular than him (B-Red). B-Red didn't agree and they went back and forth. Then an HKN Gang member, who is a Ghanaian artist, told MC Galaxy that he was not funny as a comedian. MC Galaxy replied, telling him that he was an unknown artist, and they went back and forth yabbing each other. They said all of a sudden Davido came out from the studio and asked MC Galaxy to leave.

"David didn't like that Galaxy was yabbing his boys and asked him to leave. Before Galaxy could react, David hit him on the back. Then his driver, Lati, took over, punching Galaxy and then hit him on the head with an Orijin bottle. B-Red didn't touch Galaxy and Shizzi was very upset about what was happening in his studio and tried to stop the fight. Shizzi was really upset that Galaxy was attacked. If you see MC Galaxy's eyes now"
I contacted MC Galaxy to confirm he was attacked and he confirmed it but didn't want to talk much about the incident.

"Yes, I was attacked by Davido, his driver also broke a bottle on my head. Davido is someone I love and I am surprised he did this. His manager Kamal has called to apologize to me but I would rather not have this in the public."

7 Best Highlights Of Jonathan's Tenure

The new president takes over this May, and Jonathan’s tenure will be over. Mr President has surely had a rough time being the leader of the nation.
The opposition did not let him breathe. Terrorists persistently hammered his people. The economy was in trouble due to the falling oil price. His people nearly overthrew him. For four years he has been under constant fire from almost every direction. He really should be relieved that he did not get the second term.
But there are some positive things the president should be remembered for, as he leaves the Aso Rock next month. Here are the seven best highlights of his tenure.
1. Job creation & female empowerment
The YouWin business plan competition produced 2,400 winners and created 26,000 according to the government.
Seriously, this program should have got more publicity so that people know what the president has achieved through the program. But the publicity was inadequate and so a lot of those who discount the program do so ignorantly.
The fact is, people have got jobs and the government has given people the means to grow their businesses and improve their lives. The good thing is all these were done in a largely transparent manner. People who did not have any connections got a grant. This is absolutely one of the most beneficial government programs in a long time.
President Jonathan encouraged female empowerment through his administration. He put 13 women in his cabinet for example, something no one before him ever did. By this he tried to show that he supported gender equality and he demonstrated his commitment to leveling the playing field for men and women in Nigeria.
2. Transportation
Before Jonathan, the railways were practically dead. Hardly anyone could travel by train. But today so many people use the train to commute within Lagos and across Nigeria. The Lagos-Kano gauge line has been fixed. The trains are moving again.
A lot of people say these are not the modern trains, but at least the president deserves some credit for doing something. It is not where we should be in terms of rail transport when you look at world standards, but at least now people can get around the country by train, a system that was comatose years before Jonathan administration.
Airports were also in a sorry state before Jonathan became president. The aviation system was broken. It was not so long ago that planes used to fall out of the sky. But things have changed significantly today.
The government rehabilitated over a dozen airports nationwide and built five new international passenger terminals. Better infrastructure has also been installed at airports to make flights safer. Flying in Nigeria is a lot better today than it was five years ago. Jonathan ought to be acknowledged for that achievement.
3. Communications
We have made IT advancements too. For instance, two IT Development Entrepreneur accelerators (idEa hubs) were launched in Lagos and Cross River state. Twenty seven federal universities were connected via 10GBps meshed trunk circuits to form the Nigerian research and education network with connectivity to other international research networks. We also launched the NigComSat-1R satellite to provide more options for distributed access and rural connectivity.
Furthermore, we now have a lot more online businesses thriving. The extent of transactions and activities done online signifies that more people have access to internet in Nigeria than ever before.
So from shopping to activism and education, more people are using the internet than before, and the thing is the government’s been working to make this happen by putting up the infrastructure to support mobile communication and internet use. This is remarkable.
4. Health
Two years ago we eradicated the guinea worm disease. We also eradicated Ebola last year.
When Ebola happened, a lot of people thought it would overwhelm the country, with people dying, some trying to escape to other countries and all that kind of stuff. But none of that happened.
The government appeared rattled at first, but it quickly reacted and worked with the affected state governments to contain the spread and snuff out the disease. A few months later the fight was over and the epidemic was finished.
President Jonathan and his health minister honestly did not get their fair share of the commendation for that surprising accomplishment. The opposition party stole that from them and tried to hog the spotlight, but it does not change the fact that this is one of the best highlights of the Jonathan’s tenure and a major achievement from the president that deserves a good deal of respect.
5. Education
The government has also done remarkably in education. The government developed some intervention programs to cut the number of kids who are out of school. There was the Almajiri program for example. The schools haven’t got enough publicity so that more people know what the government is accomplishing through the program, but they’ve been helping many kids in the north gain basic formal education alongside learning the Quran.
The government also set up a dozen new universities to increase access to university education. Every year over a million young Nigerians sit the UTME hoping to go to university, but most don’t make it even if they qualify, and that’s partly because the existing universities simply don’t have the capacity to absorb so many students. That’s why setting up these new schools was a timely move by the government.
Some people have tried to do down the government for this initiative, but such people obviously don’t have a son or daughter trying to get into university.
6. Security
Security has been dismal under Jonathan especially in the north with all these Boko Haram attacks. Nevertheless the army has made gains under Jonathan.
There’s the Nigerian Army Language Institute that was established to make our soldiers bilingual within the near future. The army also built the first armoured personnel carrier and first warship too. Several defence technology programs have been going on in the recent years, but understandably the crisis in the north has overshadowed them.
7. Politics
Talking about elections, one thing we’ve got to admit is that elections have got a lot better under Jonathan. The elections we’ve had since 2011 have been substantially flawed, but they’ve also probably been the most credible elections we’ve had in history.
This year is the first time an incumbent head of state has been booted out in an election, and the man President Jonathan has acted honourably so far. He’s accepted his defeat gracefully and has reached out to the incoming president in the interest of the Nigerian people. This is certainly a shining way for the president to end his tenure.
His tenure has been stormy and he certainly should have done better, but the way he’s reacted to his defeat and kept to his promise about the election is something that he’ll definitely be remembered for. It’s a fine legacy for the outgoing president.

 TB Joshua Predicted Xenophobic Attacks

Nigerian Prophet Temitope Babatunde Joshua warned South Africans in July 2013 of a ‘youth revolt’ in their nation which would result in deaths of ‘certain people’ a video evidence has shown.
Video: TB Joshua Predicted Xenophobic Attacks
Prophet TB Joshua
The video clip which was uploaded to Joshua’s popular YouTube channel, Emmanuel TV, show the spiritual father prophesying the violent xenophobic attacks spreading across South Africa on Sunday 28th July 2013.
In the clip the prophet said “In the nation, South Africa, we should help them in prayer because I am seeing youth revolt. It will be very serious. A situation where youth will come out and… you learn that there is a protest. Some people were killed – certain people.”
PM news says Joshua’s prediction made the front cover of South African newspaper ‘City Press’ in August 2013 when Julius Malema, the fiery leader of South Africa’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), visited his church in Nigeria for ‘spiritual blessings’.

The prophet in a message on his facebook page on Friday morning prayed for calm to be restored in South Africa. He said:“If we fail to see that there are powers that cause people to be bowed down in bondage, we are going to fight the wrong battle. I pray for my nation, South Africa. As Jesus stood in the boat and commanded the storms to be calm, I stand in the midst of the storm in my nation, South Africa and I command the storm, wind and waves to be calm, in the name of Jesus!”
The Nigerian government meanwhile has revealed that  Nigerians living in South Africa are yet to be attacked. This was made known by Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, the Minister of State II for Foreign Affairs.
Despite the claims by Obanikoro, the house of representatives has called on the government to take action by returning Nigerians living in South Africa. The call was made by Nnenna Elendu-Ukeje, Chairperson, House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs and Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Diaspora.
