Topic: Nigerian Millitary Reacts To Political Adverts Against Chief Of Defence Staff (Read 7959 times)

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) said it views with strong exception the political campaign advert by a political party which is currently being aired on several television channels targeting the person and office of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh for denigration.

Military spokesman, Major General Chris Olukolade in a statement said in the said advert, vile references were made about the CDS’s leadership of the ongoing counter terrorism operation in some parts of the country.

Olukolade said that the advert is simply typical of the now very common use of the print, electronic and social media to propagate the campaign of attacking or ridiculing the Nigerian Armed Forces all with the intention of scoring political points.

He said: “The issues raised in the so-called political advert have already been clarified a couple of times by the DHQ and efforts are currently being channeled towards effective prosecution of the fight against terror with a view to reversing the situation in the areas the terrorists are showing presence.

“It is therefore unfortunate that a lot of fabrications, exaggeration, misrepresentation of facts and outright falsehood are bring disseminated to achieve this unjust objective of tarnishing the reputation of the leadership and individual officers of the nation’s military, all with the aim of getting at the government of the day.

“It is rather disappointing that some politicians are yet to understand the need to separate sensitive national security issues from their zealous political activities. It is, to say the least, very unbecoming of any political party to drag the name and office of a serving Chief of Defence Staff into their political campaigns. This tendency is divisive and aimed at the morale and cohesion in the nation’s Armed Forces. Those who are so desperate to drag the military into political campaigns should realise that no political party or politician should hope to benefit from any effort to destroy the fabric of the nation’s military.

“The Chief of Defence Staff and by extension the entire personnel of Nigerian military do not belong to or work for any political party rather they work for the overall interest of the nation. The DHQ therefore urge politicians to always know when and where to draw the lines and keep the military out of their political machinations. “

Topic: Pastors Were Paid N6bn By PDP To Attack APC - Amaechi (Read 6593 times)

Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has alleged that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) bribed some Christian leaders with N6bn to campaign against Gen. Muhammadu Buhari the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Punch reports.

Amaechi said that the Christian leaders had been circulating documents to convince Nigerians that APC and Buhari would Islamise Nigeria if allowed to win the forthcoming poll.

While speaking at the Rivers APC governorship rally in Emohua Local Government Area, the governor maintained that Nigerians were too enlightened for any political party to change Nigeria to a Muslim country.

Amaechi, who is the Director-General of Buhari Presidential Campaign Organisation, urged the religious leaders to return the money given to them to the Federal Government and the pastors to stop commercializing the Christian faith.

The governor added, “Some pastors collected N6bn and they are circulating document and telling you not to vote for an Hausa man; not to vote for a Muslim; that they want to Islamise Nigeria. Tell them to return our N6bn. “They gave them N6bn; they should return it to the Federal Government coffers. They will tell you that Buhari wants to Islamise Nigeria; tell them we are too educated.

“I am a Catholic, but no Catholic priest has told me that story right now in the Catholic church because I will ask him how? If any pastor tells you that, tell him to return the money.

“Nobody can Islamise Nigeria; they have commercialised Jesus Christ. They should stop commercialising Jesus Christ. He is our Lord and Saviour. You know what Jesus Christ did in the temple; he chased them away.

“We shall chase away those pastors who have collected money from PDP to tell us lies. We shall chase them away on behalf of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

The governor, described the elections in the state as a poll between him and President Jonathan, calling on the President to show what he had done for the people of the state.

“I told the President that the election in Rivers State is a referendum between him and me. I told him anywhere I go, I will show what I have done. Let him show what he has done,” Amaechi said. Meanwhile pensioners in Rivers state have resolved  to vote out the All Progressive Congress in the February elections due to the alleged poor administration by Governor Rotimi Amaechi’s state government.

Topic: Additional AU's N8.6 Trillion 'Stolen' Under Okonjo-Iweala - Soludo Claims (Read 4228 times)

In his last article, former CBN governor, Charles Soludo said that at least N30 trillion of Nigeria's money has 'either been stolen or unaccounted for, or grossly mismanaged over the last few years' under Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as Finance Minister. He released a statement today saying that money doesn't include about N8.6 trillion the African Union claims is stolen from Nigeria annually. His statement after the cut...

I STAND BY MY STATEMENTS: Chukwuma Charles SOLUDO, CFR
1. My attention has been drawn to statements credited to the Hon. Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, in response to my latest article and call for a structured debate on the issues. According to the report, she no longer wants to join issues with me. In the circumstance of the moment, I therefore withhold parts two and three of my promised three-part response.

2. Let me also state for the avoidance of doubt that I stand by every statement I made in the two articles viz: (1) “Buhari Vs Jonathan: Beyond the Elections”; and (2) “Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and the Missing Trillions”. In particular, I insist that over N30 trillion has either been stolen or unaccounted for, or grossly mismanaged over the last few years. This figure does not include the estimated $40.9 billion (N8.6 trillion at parallel market exchange rate or nearly two years’ Federal Government budget) which the African Union’s (AU) recent report claims to be “stolen” from Nigeria each year.

3. I wish to thank Nigerians all over the world who have been contributing to this timely debate. This is election time and it is expected that some vested interests will either choose to live in denial or attempt to politicise the issues. But from the debate so far, I am convinced that our economic management won’t be the same again. Once our managers know that the citizens will rigorously and vigorously challenge them to account, the welfare of the citizens will be better for it. Whoever wins has his job cut out for him, and to the extent that this debate has challenged the respective teams to seriously re-examine their blueprints to guarantee the security and prosperity of every Nigerian, my objective is accomplished. I love my country Nigeria, and as I said before, I won’t keep quiet again.

Once more, Nigeria must survive and prosper beyond Buhari or Jonathan!

The Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on Tuesday said she would no longer reply the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Prof. Charles Soludo, over claims that that N30 trillion was stolen under her watch.

Okonjo-Iweala said this while responding to questions on a radio programme on Raypower.

She, however, advised Nigerians not to be deceived by the misinformation by some politicians in the country.

When asked to comment on the alleged missing N30 trillion, the finance minister said: “This is part of the packaged lies that Nigerians must avoid. I don’t want to enter into that debate, we have answered him (Soludo) and I don’t want to join issues with him because you don’t join issues when things don’t make any sense.”

She explained that the forensic report on the alleged unremitted oil revenue by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) that was submitted to the presidency by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC) on Monday was never under her ministry, contrary to the insinuations by some members of the public.

“There is a lot of misinformation that is being put out and it is sad for me. I have not been controlling the audit, it is the Auditor General. Nigerians have been misinformed. They left out the fact that the Auditor-General was in charge of the report.

“I was only interviewed for it and there was no way I could be in charge, but some people decided to paint it as if I was in charge of the report and that is very unfortunate.

“It is part of the packaging and misinformation in this politics, and it has to stop because Nigerians cannot be continuously deceived,” the minister said.

Responding to a question on if the country is broke, Okonjo-Iweala reiterated that 2015 is going to be a “very tough year,” adding that: “This question of the economy is broke has been going on for four years now.

“People in the opposition have tried to package this and they have been saying this because they just wish the economy will be broke because they want to get Nigerians alarmed.

“They want to make them feel hopeless about the economy. But Nigerians cannot be deceived. All these three years that they have been saying that the country is broke, has the economy not been running?

“Now they saw that oil prices are falling and they are holding on to that. I have been very clear in saying that it is going to be a difficult year for the country, but this is something we can manage.”

Continuing, she said: “The other story going around is that we are not able to pay salary. In December, the reason why salary took so long was because the payroll system we are using actually locked out some agencies when they tried to pay more people that are not in the system. The system locked out 14 agencies and we had to restore them for payment manually.

“I want to make one thing clear, because of the fall in oil price and the drop in quantity, less has been coming to the coffers.”

Topic: Federal Govt to Postpone Elections, Gives New Date (Read 17410 times)

Federal Government to postpone elections – the Federal Government is set to shift the election date., Citing the need to defuse the rising tension in the land, among other reasons, the Federal Government is set to shift the coming polls by six weeks. The presidential and National Assembly elections are currently scheduled for February 14, while those of the states will hold on February 28.Rumors has it that under the new proposal, the elections may now hold at the end of March.

The proposed change is hinged on the mounting tension in the country sequel to violent displays at some of the ongoing campaigns across the country.
The feeling inside government circles is that there is need to let the tension, which is nearing boiling point in the country at the moment, come down before the election could hold, otherwise there could be an implosion.
Sources say that within the six weeks, efforts will be made to calm frayed nerves and encourage more people to embrace peace.
It is feared that the presidential election in particular may lead to an implosion in the country.

The body language in the North suggests a possible repeat of the bloodletting that occurred after Jonathan was declared winner of the 2011 election, if the incumbent wins again. It is also feared that a similar turmoil may erupt, especially in the South South, if General Muhammadu Buhari of the All progressives Congress (APC) wins the election. Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is an Ijaw from the South South area of the country.

Besides, there is uncertainty over whether the elections could validly hold in the North Eastern states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa which have been wracked by the Boko Haram insurgency. There are security concerns over the safety of full-time and ad-hoc staff of the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) during the polls.

This development was further accentuated by the recent declaration by European Union Election Observers who said they would not be visiting the troubled states over concerns for their safety.

Another reason being adduced for the proposed shift is the non-availability of the Permanent Voters Cards (PVC) across the states. The fear is that this may end up in the disenfranchisement of many eligible voters.

Thus, the Presidency believes that shifting the polls by about six weeks would allow more people to get their PVCs and be eligible to vote.
Indeed, Section 26 (6) of the Electoral Act 2010 stipulates that an election to the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria shall be held not earlier than 150 days to the expiration of the date of office and not later than 30 days to the expiration of the office.
Thus, if the six weeks shift is finally accepted, it will be within the time stipulated by the Electoral Act as there will be about 60 days before the expiration of the incumbent’s stay in office.

Last month, the National Security Adviser, Colonel Sambo Dasuki (Rtd) at a talkshop in the UK mooted the idea of a slight shift in the date of the elections, a development that has sparked heated debates across the country.

Topic: SAD! Depressed Man Hangs Himself Because He Couldn't Cope With Life (Read 5681 times)

A troubled man who was unable to cope with the worries of life, decided to take the short cut out of life by hanging himself in an uncompleted building at Lawal Unity Street, Meiran, Ile-Iwe bus stop, in the Ile-Iwe community in the Meiran area, Lagos State, throwing residents into confusion.
According to reports, residents of the area woke up on Thursday, 29 January, 2015, to meet the sight of a man dangling from a rope in the abandoned building.
The man who was later identified by the police as Mosunmola Raphael, a 28-year-old man, was said to have been a total stranger wearing a white caftan. His body was brought down by the residents before the police took him away.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Kenneth Nwosu said that his relatives came out to identify him and reported to have had some mental and personal problems for sometime.
Recall that on the same date, a young man had also committed suicide by taking a jump into the Lagos lagoon on the Third Mainland Bridge.

In a bid to be sure of what becomes the fate of his party and President Goodluck Jonathan as the nation looks forward to the general elections, Dr. Leonard Olalekan Shogunle, decided to embark on spiritual journey to Pakistan, India and China to consult the oracle.

Having had words with the oracle in the foreign land, Shogunle (pictured below), a retired Captain in the Nigerian Army and a chieftain of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos shared his experience with Saturday Independent in an exclusive interview, saying that the oracle pronounced victory for President Goodluck Jonathan in 28 of the 36 states in the country.
Asked what informed his decision to embark on the journey, when there are countless oracles in the country, he said: “Don’t assume I was kidding with my submission. I am a real Lagosian born in the Mainland during the Lagos Colony. I am 69 years old. My great grandfathers, though, migrated from Abeokuta in Ogun State to settle in Lagos, we own Abule Onigbagbo in Maryland.
“I am from Lagos Mainland so I am a real Lagosian. If I asked a spiritualist to do that for me in the country, some people would have doubts and rubbish the fellow. Leonard Olalekan Shogunle-jide-salu.com.JSD
“This year’s general election is no joke. Nigerians must be guided in the right direction.
“Last month, I went to Pakistan, Indian and up to the extreme end of China in Yung where I consulted celestial board of oracles from the orbit. I wanted revelation concerning the political situation in Nigeria.  I was told nothing would stop the victory of Jonathan in 28 states including Lagos State.
“I was told that although there would be some uproar in some states after Jonathan is announced as winner, that would eventually die down with time. The oracle said General Mohammadu Buhari of All Progressives Congress (APC) was no match for him.
“As a person, I believe in the prophecy because even in the Bible, oracle was consulted when Jonah was swallowed by a shark. I was told that apart from winning the 28 states, the President would record over 70 per cent of the total votes cast in 11 other states.
He said : “Yes, the chief priests in those countries spoke to me.  They were not black people like us. Their languages were interpreted to me. There were signs they gave me that the victory of Jonathan was certain. I did the same thing before the 1999 election and the oracle predicted that somebody from the prison would win the presidential election and I gave my support to former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
“The oracle further revealed that there would be progress in Nigeria after President Jonathan wins second term. However, a note of warning was sounded to the Boko Haram in their own interest. The sect was warned to desist from what can cause bloodletting in the nation, as a result of retaliation from Niger Delta militants.
“The Boko Haram should know that they are poor people and no match for the militants. The militants are rich guys who can afford to buy ammunition to fight anywhere in the world but the Boko Haram boys can’t afford that. Therefore, they should embrace peace. Their godfathers were some former Northern governors that were giving them N10 million monthly.
“Buhari is going to fail. The former military head of state cannot win because he is totalitarian and not a democrat. When I was in the military, I was the one who wrote a document on War Against Indiscipline (WAI) as my handout and I gave it to him. That was why he implemented WAI.  I am a retired Captain in the Nigerian army. I left the service in 1978.
“APC’s slogan is change while Jonathan’s own is development. Change can be anything. It can be death, madness, sickness or otherwise. Buhari did nothing for the nation except that he jailed our past leaders. You can see that immediately Jonathan won the last presidential election, some Northern leaders said they were going to make the nation ungovernable for him.
“That is what we are battling till date. Power belongs to God and He gives it to whoever he wants. You can never take it by force. I was amazed at the level of insult the former Governor of Lagos State, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and other APC leaders were passing at the President. If Jonathan was not mature and peaceful, all the attacks on him in the Northern states would have turned to something else.
“ Sometime ago, the Boko Haram overran 12 local governments in one of the Northern states within 12 hours. How could that be? I was a soldier man; I knew how we used to advance for operation, without the connivance of the people, the state and local government in that state, such can never be successful. So there are may enemies within nation, as regards the insurgency,”
Shogunle said.
