For years now the fashion industry has weathered criticism over its unequal hiring and representation of models of color -- if not outright racism -- and while there's still a ways to go, it seems like some people are actually listening to complaints and trying to create change. At NYFW many of the biggest break-out faces this season have been from a diverse range of backgrounds, races, ethnicities and nationalities, giving hope that the days of runways featuring all white models could finally start becoming a thing of the past. Below, meet ten rising stars who made their mark this week.

Lineisy Montero (@linesiymontero)

Sharing the cover of Teen Vogue's August 2015 issue alongside list makers Imaan Hammam and Aya Jones, Lineisy Montero is the 19-year-old Dominican dynamite that's blowing up the runways of Alexander Wang, Tommy Hilfiger, Givenchy, Oscar de la Renta, Michael Kors and, most recently, Calvin Klein. So refreshing are her face and 'fro that she also appears in Prada's F/W 2015 and almost every major league NYFW runway this season.

Karly Loyce (@karlyloyce)

After being charged with racism by model-turned-activist Bethann Hardison and supermodels Iman and Naomi Campbell back in 2013, Céline has made a diversity leap by casting fresh face Karly Loyce for the brand's F/W 2015 campaign, joining the ranks of perennial Céline icon Daria Werbowy and Joan Didion. A biology student from Martinique, Karly Loyce walked in shows like Tommy Hilfiger, Michael Kors, Oscar de la Renta and Calvin Klein this season.

Pooja Mor (@poojamor)

A former computer engineering student from India who won her university's pageant contest, Pooja is like the platonic ideal of beauty and brains. After a painful plummet down the Givenchy runway at the start of NYFW, she became fashion's biggest comeback story after she got right back up, gave a double hair-flip, and went on to grace the runways of brands like Victoria Beckham, Derek Lam, Tory Burch and Calvin Klein.

Amilna Estevao (@amilnaestevao)

Discovered in 2013 after participating in the Elite Model Look competition in Angola and snagging the cover of New York Times Style Magazine's 2015 Beauty Issue, Amilna Estevao has since been seen walking everything from Givenchy to Coach.

Issa Lish (@issalien)

Discovered while waiting tables for her father's sushi restaurant in Mexico City (she is of Mexican-Japanese descent) as punishment for doing poorly in school, Issa is now one of modeling's straight-A students. Appearing on the cover of Vogue Italia's April 2015 issue, shot by Steven Meisel, and in the pages of our September issue, Lish has also walked shows for Proenza Schouler, Michael Kors, Oscar de la Renta, Prabal Gurung, Alexander Wang, Givenchy and DVF, among others.

Imaan Hammam (@hammamimaan)

Dutch raised of Egyptian-Moroccan descent, Imaan Hammam went from being discovered meandering about Central Station in Amsterdam at the age of 14 to opening Givenchy's S/S 2014 show as Ricardo Tisci's latest muse at the age of 18. After gracing the cover of Vogue's 2014 September issue among the "New Supers," she's been appearing everywhere during NYFW, including shows like Givenchy, rag & bone, Michael Kors and more.

Aya Jones (@iamayajones)

Scouted on the streets of Paris, French-Ivorian 20-year-old Aya Jones is another model that hit the ground strutting as a Prada exclusive for its S/S 2015 runway show. With model-turned-activist Bethann Hardison as her primary role model, Aya Jones is staying active by advertising for Gap, H&M, Marc Jacobs, and Prada and walking for Coach, Tommy, Oscar De La Renta, Michael Kors, and DVF this NYFW.

Lameka Fox (@lamekafox)

After tagging three photos of herself to IMG Models' Instagram scouting campaign @WeLoveYourGenes with the campaign's hashtag, #WLYG, Lameka was contacted within 24 hours of her submission and was signed to IMG two days later. With only a Marc Jacobs Resort 2016 show under her belt, Lameka Fox is a newcomer whose quickly catching the attention of tastemaking brands like Hood By Air and Public School, both of whom cast her in their recent shows.

Alexis Primous (@alexisprimous)

Winner of W Magazine's Instagram Model Search, 20-year-old Florida college student Alexis Primous made her debut in an 8-page spread in the magazine's September Issue shot by Mario Sorrenti and styled by Edward Enniful. She's since followed that up with turns on the catwalk for Hood by Air, DVF, Derek Lam and 3.1 Phillip Lim.

Joe Maddon on Cardinals' retaliation: 'We don't start stuff, but we will finish stuff'

    Mark Townsend

The Chicago Cubs-St. Louis Cardinals rivalry is back at the forefront of Major League Baseball.
The legendary franchises have been doing battle since 1892, playing a grand total of 2,359 games. Along the way there have been many peaks and valleys in terms of the rivalry's intensity. Now though, with both teams seemingly guaranteed to make the postseason, it's naturally peaking again. Friday's heated game at Wrigley Field will only take that to another level.
The Cubs walked away with an 8-3 victory, cutting their deficit in the NL Central to six games. They also walked away with a chip on their shoulder following a series of hit batters, which included star first baseman Anthony Rizzo getting plunked twice.
Among those leading the charge was fearless manager Joe Maddon. In his postgame presser, Maddon pulled no punches, feeling that the Cardinals purposely targeted Rizzo the second time after Matt Holliday was unintentionally hit on the helmet by Dan Haren. Maddon seemed to imply that the growing issue between the teams is just getting started, and then clearly mentioned the Cubs intentions to finish it.
Yeah, it's on. And no doubt the league will be watching the rest of this weekend's series closely.
As for Friday's incident, it all started innocently enough. Rizzo was hit by his league-leading 28th pitch in the fourth inning, which was definitely not intentional. In fact, it loaded the bases and gave the Cubs an opportunity to blow the game wide open much earlier than they did.
Obviously, Rizzo doesn't like getting hit, but he also likely realizes it's bound to happen given his approach to the plate. He's not about to change that, so he rarely shows frustration or allows tensions to escalate.
Unfortunately, the following half-inning is when Holliday was beaned by Haren. The Cubs and Haren contend it was unintentional, but the timing set off alarms with the Cardinals.
Holliday was forced to leave the game after being struck in the back of his helmet by Haren's 86 mph fastball, which no doubt added to the Cardinals anger.

At that point, warnings were issued by the umpiring crew. Haren says he also specifically warned Rizzo that retaliation could be coming. He says he based that on the Cardinals history, and sure enough it happened in the seventh. Rizzo was hit on the calf by a Matt Belisle pitch. Both Belisle and Cardinals manager Mike Matheny were immediately ejected.
As for Maddon, he was steamed. So much that he still had plenty of anger left over at the podium.
Now it will be interesting to see just how much of that anger truly carries over. With two games left in the weekend series and tensions already sky high, there's definitely potential for more fireworks. However, as already mentioned, both teams are going to the postseason barring something unforeseen. If they were wise, they would diffuse this situation right now and not let it become the basis of their unforeseen circumstances.

Zendaya (Splash News)
Zendaya may have made a name for herself as a Disney Channel star and producer, a Billboard-charting artist, and a red carpet fashionista, but it's her continued eloquence and maturity in dealing with online haters and uncomfortable media situations that's cementing her position as a role model.
But being articulately outspoken — and effectively disarming those who've been gunning for her — wasn't a skill set that developed overnight. Though the 19-year-old singer/actress credits much of her verbal maneuvering to her supportive upbringing, she says that a lot of her know-how is also the result of good, old-fashioned growing up.
"I think that it's been something I've learned to do over the years," she tells Yahoo Celebrity. "Being brought up in an environment where I've been able to have a voice, and knowing your value… I think that alone allows me to communicate that way. But it's also growing up and learning how to handle situations. I learned from trial and error — responding to something in a certain way and then realizing, 'No, that wasn't right. Let's try that again.' You learn to take your time with certain responses, and really think, and use your brain."
.

However, it was more than brain power on display when Zendaya infamously shut down Giuliana Rancic's commentary on her Oscar-night 'do — it was a lot of heart too. After schooling Rancic — and effectively, the world — on the latent prejudice that surrounds African-American hair, she graciously accepted Rancic's apology and continued to use it as an opportunity for open dialogue with more than 6 million of her Twitter followers.
More recently, Zendaya schooled Twitter trolls who deemed her parents "ugly," choosing instead to celebrate her parents' selfless nature and finishing with, "Please, log out, go to school, hug a teacher and read a textbook. And while you're at it, go look in the mirror and know that you too are beautiful, because such hateful things only stem from internal struggles. Bless you."

Zendaya is as proud of her parents as they are of her (Getty Images)
Even with all the online drama, Zendaya isn't ready to give up on social media.
"I think that social media can be a beautiful thing, and it can be very difficult," she notes. "It's all in how you handle it. We have the control — you have the control to decide what goes on it, through your feed… nobody can tell you what to post and how to react to things, so I think we all need to understand we have that power, and start learning to use it wisely and stop taking it for granted."
But she does have a message for those looking to bolster their self-esteem through online interactions: "I don't suggest anyone get on the Internet if they're not comfortable with themselves. If you haven't found self-peace, the Internet isn't the place to find that. You have to find that in real life."
It's this approach to outspoken self-esteem that led Zendaya to partner with Barbie to host the Rock n' Royals Concert Experience at the Hollywood Palladium on Saturday, Sept. 26. Encouraging girls to "Raise Their Voice," the event also celebrates the release of Barbie's latest movie with surprise performances of the film's songs, a pink carpet and Super Style Zone area for attendees to primp and prime, a Super Dance Zone, and a chance to rock out in the VH1 Rock Star Zone.
While Zendaya is excited about her hosting duties, she's even more ecstatic about having visited Barbie headquarters.
"When I was little, I didn't have one that looked like me, so I couldn't connect with her in that way," Zendaya explains. "But getting to visit the Mattel offices and see Barbie’s vision for the future… it was really cool. I was able to see how they plan to diversify, broadening the horizons and the image of Barbie, and make it more, you know, open. I left the office feeling it was definitely something I wanted to be a part of."
Another factor that made Zendaya want to host the Rock 'n Royals Concert Experience? Proceeds from the event will benefit the VH1 Save the Music Foundation. Not only are her parents educators, but Zendaya went to an arts school — Oakland School for the Arts — and credits its influence for the life she leads now. "I think it's really important young people have an outlet, something they can focus their energy on," she adds. "Idle time leads to negative things."
.
Zendaya at the Met Gala 2015 (Splash News)

Much like Barbie, Zendaya is also a bit of a fashion plate. Her unique style transitions from event to event, whether it’s her Oscar locs, her short-cropped 'do and even shorter shirtdress at the BET Awards, or her incredible Met Gala gown. She’s even set to release her first shoe line — named Daya, after her childhood nickname — in spring 2016.
Zendaya credits her fashion evolution to being less afraid to have fun and express herself, and dressing for herself and not for the approval of others. Likening it to cultivating self-esteem, Zendaya feels her style has evolved as she has, adding, "There’s no definition. You create the definition as you learn more about yourself. With time, you’ll figure out who you are, fashion wise and style wise."
Which isn't to say that everything in the world of style is fair game — witness Hunger Games actress Amandla Stenberg's reaction to Kylie Jenner's summer cornrows. Zendaya is pretty candid herself on the subject of cultural appropriation, pointing out how important awareness is.

"I think that when it comes to cultures and identity, especially with a culture who has been oppressed or experienced a lot of oppression, it's important for everyone to remain sensitive," she says. "And if someone is going to wear something that may be deemed culturally insensitive, don't wear or adopt it — just to do it. You can aggravate people if you're approaching it just for fashion trend. Instead, learn about it. Do more than just wearing it — help create understanding.
"I learned from a conference I was in that there are two different kinds of ignorance," Zendaya continues. "There's one where you don't know and aren't aware, and that's the type that can be healed. And then there's the kind where people are ignorant of their own ignorance, and that's the type you have to battle against and help people see. So I think it’s definitely something to be aware of and not be afraid to have conversations about, but also be very careful.”

Regardless of where she goes next, Zendaya aims to encourage her fans to be their best selves, and find the courage to speak up and use their voices in powerful and profound ways — even when they don’t think they can.
As Zendaya puts it, "I think number one is knowing that it doesn't happen overnight. It's not like anyone is born with perfect self-confidence. It takes time to learn who you are and understand and be happy with yourself. So take your time."

“The View” has lost three more major advertisers in the wake of the ongoing #NursesUnite controversy.

They join Eggland’s Best and Johnson & Johnson, who removed their advertising earlier this week following backlash from nurses over mocking comments made about a contestant in Sunday’s Miss America pageant.
