More than 150 crocodiles, alligators and caimans were recently rescued from a man in the Toronto-area who had been keeping the reptiles as pets, according to the reptile rescue zoo that took in the animals.
The reptiles, which were all adults and between 4 to 11 feet in length, were taken and transported by 25 volunteers to the Indian River Reptile Zoo over a four-day period beginning last Friday, according to the zoo's curator, Bry Loyst. He added that the volunteers used four 26-foot-long trucks to transport the animals to the zoo.
"Interestingly enough, this individual phoned our rescue and told us he could no longer take care of the 150 crocodiles, alligators and caimans," Loyst told ABC News today. "I didn't really believe it, but when I went over there, sure enough, it was true."

Most of the animals, which the man had kept for over a decade, were inside aquariums they had outgrown in a fairly large garage, Loyst said. The reptiles were in "fairly good health," though many of them did not have "muscle tone" since they couldn't move around much in their aquariums, he added.
"He did the wrong thing by buying these crocodiles, he did not idiotic thing by buying 150 of them, but he did the right thing by donating the money and animals to a proper place that can care for them," Loyst said.
Luckily, the zoo recently added a new $1 million crocodile rescue building, which has over 100,000 gallons of water held in multiple pools, Loyst added, saying that many of the rescued animals would be housed there.
The reptile rescue's board of directors told Loyst not to share the identity of the owner of crocs, gators and caimans, he said. The man donated a "generous amount" to the Indian River Reptile Zoo, he added, saying that the zoo is the only accredited nonprofit reptile rescue in North America.

When I lived in Washington, D.C., right after college, I was the only one of five roommates who had a car. The townhouse we rented was just three blocks from a Metro station which meant that for most of us, it wasn’t necessary. But when my employer moved to the Virginia suburbs, I had no choice but to get one for the commute.
Now I’m a parent of a teenager who recently got her license. We have three drivers in a two-car family, in a small city with not-so-hot public transportation. So of course we’re wrestling with the question many families and young drivers face: When should I buy my first car?
“We’re seeing that millennials are purchasing cars at a much earlier point in life, which is giving them the opportunity to build credit a little differently than previous generations,” said Rod Griffin, Experian’s director of public education. “This is a critical time for members of this generation as they are learning to use credit as a tool." When we think about getting a car we often think in terms of the car payment, but the total cost of getting a vehicle can be much higher than that. Start with your car loan payment (assuming you don’t get a vehicle from a family member or pay cash for one). But don’t stop there. There are other important costs you’ll need to factor in. Try to work out a monthly figure for these so you can come up with a good estimate of your monthly outlay:

• Insurance
• Down payment
• Parking
• Oil changes
• Taxes/tags or license plate renewal
• Maintenance (including tire rotations and other maintenance expenses, especially if used)
• Fuel
• Tolls

A car with a $350 monthly payment can easily wind up costing double that when all is said and done. Is that affordable based on your budget? A good rule of thumb is to try to keep total car costs at less than 20 percent of your income, recommends Tim Russi, president of auto finance for Ally Financial. Next, compare that cost to the time and money you’ll spend using other transportation. For example, if you live and work in a metropolitan area with good public transportation, you may need a car only occasionally and you’d be much better off using a car sharing service, renting a car or even taking a taxi or Uber when needed. For commuting, there may be carpooling options that are cheaper, albeit a little less convenient at times.
Another factor is your credit scores. Have you established credit already? If you don't have a good credit score you may need to get a co-signer. If you do, you put their credit scores at risk if you can't make your payments at any point during the term of the loan. If possible, you could also wait to improve your credit score and maybe even earn a better interest rate on your car loan.

Now think through what happens if things change and your car is no longer affordable. Will you be upside-down and forced to sell it at a loss? Four teenagers were in custody Friday for allegedly carjacking and kidnapping a law enforcement officer who was on vacation in Florida.
Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings called the suspects high school students "playing a dangerous game."
Demings announced the arrest of the first three suspects -- ages 18, 16 and 15 -- on Friday afternoon. The final suspect, an 18-year-old, was arrested Friday night.
They are facing charges of armed kidnapping, carjacking with a firearm and aggravated battery with a firearm, the sheriff's office said.

The victim was also bound and restrained in the car, Demings said. The suspects took the victim's wallet, as well, Demings said.
But the terrifying kidnapping soon came to an end.
After the victim's wife hadn't heard from him, she notified the police through the OnStar auto security system, Demings said. An OnStar representative placed a call to the car and heard someone screaming for help, said Demings. When the suspects heard the OnStar operator, they ditched the victim and fled in the car, allowing the victim to free himself, Demings said.
The car was abandoned and later recovered, the Orange County Sheriff's Office said.
The victim was hospitalized for minor injuries, Demings said, and has since been released.
There's no indication that the victim was targeted because he's a federal officer, Demings said, adding that the victim was not armed at the time.
"Because he was a law enforcement officer, I believe that he was well trained, he had a certain amount of calmness," Demings said.

Bears have become frequent uninvited guests at Doug Harder's Sandpoint, Idaho, home.

Then, this Wednesday, Harder came home from a few days away to find a mess inside his condo, likely left behind by a bear that pushed through his sliding glass door. The bear likes flour, brownie mix, Toblerone, and Pepsi, Harder said.
The next morning, this bear was standing up on Harder's deck.
But it didn't stop there.
The bear's latest break-in was this Thursday night. Harder said he heard noises at his door then found a bear trying to get through his cat's door.
Harder said he wasn't scared because he knew the bear was too large to get through.
He said he was lucky to get the shot, because within a few seconds, the bear was gone.

Police in New Orleans have released photos and surveillance video of a man wanted for attempted armed robbery after he reportedly walked into a Wal-Mart with a gun.
After police received reports of an armed robber walking into the store in the city's Gentilly neighborhood Saturday around 6 a.m., SWAT teams evacuated and searched the store, but they did not find an armed robber inside.
No one was injured in the incident, which remains under investigation, police said. A spokeswoman for Wal-Mart Corp. told the Associated Press the store was open again at midday.

Smoke is rising over Chelan, Washington, as wildfires threaten the town, located about 175 miles east of Seattle.
The fires burned down utility poles, leaving 9,000 homes without power, officials said.
Fifteen hundred homes are under evacuation orders. The local hospital was also evacuated.

Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump has released his specific plan for immigration reform.
In the 6-page report titled "Immigration Reform That Will Make America Great Again," Trump is calling for an end to birthright citizenship, saying it "remains the biggest magnet for illegal immigration."
Trump again repeated his commitment to build a wall on the United States' southern border. Outlining his plan, Trump's policy seeks to "impound all remittance payments derived from illegal wages; increase fees on all temporary visas issued to Mexican CEOs and diplomats (and if necessary cancel them); increase fees on all border crossing cards -- of which we issue about 1 million to Mexican nationals each year (a major source of visa overstays); increase fees on all NAFTA worker visas from Mexico (another major source of overstays); and increase fees at ports of entry to the United States from Mexico [Tariffs and foreign aid cuts are also options]."
"We will not be taken advantage of anymore," Trump added in his most specific policy statement to date on immigration.

A 24-year-old man rescued his baby niece from a car that had fallen 100 feet from a mountainside road in Alabama, a dramatic encounter captured on his cellphone. Tyler Blake Kimbrall was following his sister Destiny Kay Hollis, who was driving a Mitsubishi coupe with her 11-month-old daughter Breleigh at night on Aug. 4, when she suddenly made a wrong turn on Blue Road in Colbert Heights, he told ABC News.
Kimbrall tried flashing his lights and honking his horn, but Hollis didn't notice, he said. She continued down the "snake-like road" and disappeared after taking a sharp curve, he said.
When he came around a few seconds later, he said he saw the car "upside down in an embankment" about 100 feet down from the mountainside road.

But then "I heard her get out of the car, frantically screaming for Breleigh," who was still in the car, he said.
He added that Hollis was screaming, "I don't think she's alive, I don't think she's alive," but he told her to go with his grandmother, who was in his car and asked her to call 911.
When Kimbrall got down to the car, he said he saw the passenger side was crushed. He added he had a hard time seeing baby Breleigh, so he used the light from his cellphone and took video, using the screen to see her by angling the phone a certain way.
"When I did first see her in the video, she appeared to be lifeless," he said. "She just laid there, passed out, unconscious, and that scared me."
Kimbrall said he then checked for her pulse, which was still going, so he began to carefully remove her from the vehicle.
Minutes into the seven-minute video of the rescue, baby Breleigh can finally be heard crying -- a cry that Kimbrall said "was the most precious cry he could ever hear."
As ambulances and emergency personnel arrived, evidenced by the flashing blue and red lights in the video, Kimbrall said an EMT allowed him to continue rescuing his niece.
"I finally got her out and handed her right over to [an EMT]," he said.

Emergency personnel checked his sister's and Breleigh's vital signs and determined that they were OK, he added, saying they were not transported to the hospital. A helicopter was even launched to the scene but was cleared because it was determined "there was not a need for the trauma system to be activated," Colbert County Emergency Management Authority (EMA) director Mike Malton told ABC News. "There was a patient-refusal-for-treatment form filled out, so it doesn’t look like the victims were taken to a hospital."
Kimbrall said everyone involved was physically fine except the car, "which was a complete loss."

A social experiment posted on YouTube is getting a lot of attention -- an attempt to show how easy it can be for strangers to target teens.
In the video, which has garnered more than 24 million hits, a 13-year-old girl is seen meeting up with a complete stranger she met online, but what she doesn’t know is that this is an experiment and her father is waiting close by.
The young man she’s meeting in the park after texting with him is Coby Persin, a YouTube star known for silly and outrageous pranks. But this stunt is catching the attention of millions of parents who are now asking if their kids are also at risk.
“I went into this and didn’t know it was going to work, and then I knew it was going to be a big video when I showed it to my mother and then she cried,” Persin told ABC News. “I was like, ‘Wow, this is powerful.’”
To begin, Persin made a Facebook profile posing as a 15-year-old boy.
“With the parents’ permission I friend requested three girls, ages 14, 13 and 12-years old,” he explains in the video.
After texting and chatting on the phone, he told the girls he wanted to meet up. Persin was in touch with the girls’ parents the entire time, keeping them informed about the exchanges and conversations they were having.
“I don’t think she’s going to open the door,” one father told him.
“She just said, ‘I think my dad’s asleep. You can come now,” Persin told the dad of his daughter’s actions.
The dramatic video is sparking a barrage of comments on social media, most saying it’s hard to watch but needs to be seen.
Some teens were more cautious than to meet up with Persin, however. He says he initially contacted six young girls and three of them quickly backed away from him online.
Child safety advocate Callahan Walsh is the National Outreach Coordinator for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
“It does pain me to watch this video,” he said. “We do want to keep our kids safe, but we don’t encourage parents to resort to scare tactics like this one. It’s really about ongoing conversations that they need to have with their children. I’m sure these three girls in this case learned their lesson, but again it’s not something we parents should have to resort to.”
Callahan says parents can show this video to their children as a “teachable moment.”
He recommends having ongoing conversation with your kids.
“Pertaining to this video particularly, I think the most important thing is for children to never go meet somebody in the real world that they met online if they don’t already know them in person,” Callahan explained. “So meeting somebody that they just met online is the number one thing that we tell parents to tell their kids, ‘Don’t do.’”
“Making sure that you’re not putting out your full name, your address, things like that, and only allowing people to view your page that you know in real life,” he said. “You shouldn’t be accepting friend requests from people that you don’t know.
