A concerned Nigerian, Adeolu Isadiran, amidst the buzz generated by the inauguration of Nigeria’s incoming president, Muhammadu Buhari, reflects on the kidnap of the Chibok girls on a day other kids were celebrating children’s day.
Read below:
“Ruminating on the state of the nation, and the thought that President Jonathan will hand over power to Muhammad Buhari in about 24 hours from now crossed my mind. Then again, I remember that it is already 409 days today since over 200 schoolgirls were abducted from a secondary school in Chibok, Borno State, by the members of Boko Haram terrorists group and they are yet to be handed over to their respective parents. Also, it is another Children’s Day. I thought of the ‘pains’ the ‘free Nigerians’ are going through at the moment – fuel scarcity, electricity shutdown and more and again I tried to imagine the agony the girls will be going through in the hands of their abductors.

President Goodluck Jonathan had in the past made series of public statements assuring that his government will do everything necessary to ensure that the kidnapped Chibok girls are rescued. It is already 24 hours to the handing over date; yet, the whereabouts of the Chibok girls is still elusive.
Though our soldiers have recorded some successes in rescuing a group of women and girls, however, what could have been a perfect complement/icing on the cake for the May 29 handing over ceremony is being able to rescue these girls and hand them over to their parents. But except for a miracle, this is not likely to happen with the President Jonathan’s government.
The question then is who will hand over the Chibok girls back to their parents and when? It is another Children’s Day celebration again, making it the second that the girls are spending in the camp of their abductors. Since the government of President Jonathan has failed to rescue these girls, the onus is therefore on the incoming government of Muhammad Buhari to ensure that the mystery around the whereabouts of the Chibok girls is unravelled; the girls rescued and handed over to their parents”.

A report released by Human Rights Watch six months ago revealed that no fewer 500 women and girls have been abducted by the dreaded Boko Haram sect since 2009 to 2014 and most of them have been forcefully married, while others have been forced to join them in their fight against Nigeria’s security agents.

A Boko Haram survivor narrated how Boko Haram insurgents had killed almost all his family members in  Zha, Hong LGA of Adamawa state.
The tragedy occurred almost 7 months ago, but  James Yaduma is yet to recover from the most horrible experience of his life.
According to Leadership, Yaduma said his life would never be the same. He saw how his father, mother and other relatives were burnt alive by the militants who stormed their community last year.
“They struck our village in the wee hours of that fateful Friday and started shooting indiscriminately leading to the death of many residents.
“My aged parents, who could not run for dear lives, were trapped in our family house where the insurgents met them, set a bonfire and threw them inside alive.
“When I started hearing gun shots, I instantly knew that Boko Haram had struck our village having taken over Mubi and other parts of the state. Since they took over Mubi, we could not sleep anymore as we knew very soon our village will come under attack.”

Having managed to survive, the man trekked for three weeks. Luckily,  he met some cattle rearers who accommodated him for few a days before showing him the way.
“After I escaped, I set out to Abuja since I know I have relatives here. I trekked most of the distance from Hong to Abuja but at intervals some spirited motorists do offer some help after hearing my ordeal.”
Finally, Yaduma addressed Muhammadu Buhari, the president-elect, who is to take over the office on May 29.
“I am appealing to president-elect, whom I believe is an upright man to do all within his power to restore peace in Nigeria as many people have been made to suffer unnecessarily, having lost their lives and properties to the insurgency.
“Some of us want to return back to our villages but we cannot do so; all our houses, businesses and farms have been destroyed.”
Meanwhile the Nigerian army has recorded many successful operations in the recent period. Most of them have been carried out in Sambisa Forest, the infamous Boko Haram hideout. On May 22, after having freed hundreds of hostages, the troops rescued 20 more women and children from Sambisa.

26-year-old Hafsat, who spent almost a year in Boko Haram has recounted her ordeal in Sambisa forest.
Hasfat, a victim of the insurgents also lost  two of her three sons.

Hafsat, a 26-year-old mother of three, was abducted by Boko Haram militants in Yaza, Borno state almost a year ago. She says the day of abduction was the last time she saw her two elder sons, who were eight and six years old.
When jihadists came to her village 11 months ago they started killing everyone in sight. Women were separated from their children and forced to watch their husbands murdered and their houses burnt.

When the shooting stopped, we were all led like animals into the forest”, tells Hafsat, who carried her youngest two-year-old son in her arms. “I saw babies die and watched in pain as children were asked to bury them.
According to her, she was flogged daily for 11 months because she refused to renounce her religion.

In Sambisa Forest, I was asked to renounce my religion or be treated as a slave. I refused, and I was flogged daily. I did the chores and was given maize and guinea-corn peels to eat. At that time, it meant a lot because some days I had nothing to eat.

Hafsat is now living in the Malkohi camp in Yola, Adamawa State. It has become a home to the 275 females rescued from Boko Haram militants recently by Nigerian army. The camp houses more than 1,000 refugees including women and children recently rescued from Sambisa forest.
Some women recently rescued by Nigerian troops from Boko Haram insurgents have confessed that they never knew that elections have been held in the country, which led to the defeat of Goodluck Jonathan.

Following last week’s successful rescue of 275 women from the captivity of the fading Boko Haram terrorist group in Sambisa Forest, one of the traumatized women on Sunday narrated her ordeal at the hands of the sect members.

One of the returnees whose name was given as Asabe Aliyu, a 23-year-old mother of four children from Delsak, a village near Chibok town, told a Daily Times correspondent at Malkoi, one of the camps for displaced persons in Yola, Adamawa state, that beating was the order of the day in the Boko Haram camp.
Aliyu said she has been intermittently vomiting blood, an indication that she sustained internal injuries during her manhandling at the terrorist’s camp.
She said in addition to the deployment of all forms of vulgar words, the terrorists forced her into marrying one of them after a series of sexual assaults unleashed on her by different men on a daily basis.
Aliyu, who appears in poor health, further disclosed that death was the punishment for any infraction or mistake in Sambisa under the terrorist group.
“I was abducted six months ago in Delsak when our village was overrun by Boko Haram. First I had sojourned from my village to a forest close to Cameroun, they turned me into a sex machine. They took turns to sleep with me. Now, I am pregnant and I cannot identify the father,” she said.
Asabe went further to reveal that she even thought that the pregnancy would bring compassion from the sect, but was disappointed that with her condition as a pregnant woman she was still compelled to cook for the sect members.
Another rescued woman, Lami Musa, who was seen carrying a three-day-old baby girl, looked tired and haggard.
Lami, whose legs were swollen and had to be supported before she could walk, said the sect members abducted the whole of her family and killed her husband at Kilkasa forest when she was four months’ pregnant.
“They took us to Sambisa forest, we were sleeping in an open field. For days, we went without water or food. Three days ago, I gave birth to this baby girl. As I am talking to you, I cannot ascertain the status of her health. I have not had a bath since I was delivered of the baby. The baby is yet to be bathed too,” Lami said.
Maryamu Adamu, who hails from Minchika in Adamawa state, also revealed that she saw the hell called Sambisa Forest.
Adamu said she did not know if her two children and husband were still alive because she had not set eyes on them since she was kidnapped and taken to Sambisa Forest nine months ago.
“I know I was dead, my existing now is just a mere shadow of life as nothing moves me. But now that I am here, I confirm that I am a living being. I thank God that I am alive. I thank God,” she said.
Daily Times reported that the camp housed both old and young returnees, as well as girls who may need a long time to readjust to normal living.
Some of the rescued women, who declined to give their names, said that they trekked for three days before they were rescued and finally taken to Yola. Many of them looked hunger-stricken while the children kept wailing as a result of illness and malnutrition.
Some of the women and children had to be assisted as they could not walk on their own while another set of returnees could not alight from the vehicles that brought them from Sambisa Forest as a result of exhaustion and hunger.

A displaced man, staying in Malkoi Camp in Yola, where the women were taken to, had a reunion of sorts.
The man reportedly saw four of his cousins and their children, who the family had thought were dead, among the 275 rescued women. He openly expressed his joy in tears.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian military recently released footage that shows how women and children earlier kidnapped by Boko Haram terrorists tried to escape after an aerial bombardment forced the militants to flee their base in Sambisa Forest.

Ms Zainab Bangura, UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict, described Boko Haram militants and their fellow jihadists from ISIS as the worst sexual abusers in the world.

Zainab Bangura says Boko Haram and ISIS are the worst sexual abusers in the world.
Boko Haram militants along with ISIS jihadists described as the worst sexual abusers in the world by the UN spokeswoman Zainab Bangura.
I am appalled by reports that hundreds of the recently released female captives were repeatedly raped by Boko Haram militias and compelled to “marry” their captors,” she told. “In order to give rise to a new generation raised in their own image, they [Boko Haram militants]are waging war on women’s physical, sexual and reproductive autonomy and rights,” added Ms. Bangura.

One year after the Chibok Girls abduction many of them are still believed to be held hostages somewhere in Sambisa forest. Bangura told UN still insists on immediate release of the abducted female hostages.  “I reiterate my calls for all abducted women and girls to be immediately released from captivity and returned safely to their families,” she told.

The UN official told that extreme sexual violence is a distinctive feature in Boko Haram terror tactics. The UN official told that she recently met with in the Middle East with female ISIS victims freed from sexual slavery and Boko Haram has a lot in common with ISIS militants in committing atrocities on sexual grounds.
Recently Amnesty International released a documentary about female hostages abducted by Boko Haram since the start of 2014, many of whom have been forced into sexual slavery and trained to fight. It is believed that no less than 2,000 women have been abducted since 2014.
Report, released by Human Rights Watch six months ago has revealed that no fewer 500 women and girls have been abducted by the dreaded Boko Haram sect since 2009 to 2014 and most of them have been forcefully married, while others have been forced to join them in their fight against Nigeria’s security agents.

The president-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, can save lives of the 66 Nigerian soldiers who were sentenced to death for denying to fight Boko Haram insurgents.
Femi Falana, the popular human rights lawyer, told this to BBC reporters.
He said Buhari had promised to review all operations against the insurgents.

Falana noted that he was now confident the soldiers, who said they needed arms to take on the Boko Haram terrorists, would not be executed and face justice.
The lawyer added the Nigerian government had failed to satisfactorily equip the units fighting the terrorism in the North East.
They [the soldiers] did not sign to commit suicide but to fight for their fatherland and since the government did not make weapons available, they were unable to fight,” he told journalists.
The sentences are awaiting confirmation but we are taking steps to ensure that no soldier, no officer in Nigeria is executed on account of the negligence of the Nigerian state in motivating the soldiers to fight and equipping them.”
According to him, the incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan “had refused to assist to the request of the convicted soldiers to review their matter“.
So happily the incoming government of Gen Muhammadu Buhari has promised to review the entire operations in the north-east region and we are confident that the cases of the officers and the soldiers will be reviewed so that justice will be done to them.”

Falana also was cited to say the courts martial were a “travesty” as they were held in secret and evidence supplied by some of the accused indicated corrupt officials often diverted money meant for salaries and arms.
It worth be mentioning that only from the end of January, with military backing from Chad, Cameroon and Niger, army began to retake territory.
Meanwhile, sporadic attacks and violence have continued.
The group is still keeping many women, girls and children in custody comprising 219 schools girls it abducted from a school in Chibok in April last year.
This week it was disclosed that another 579 soldiers face trial over indiscipline.

Editor’s note: The controversy-inducing report by Amnesty International on alleged atrocities the Nigerian military unleashed on Nigeria’s north-east continues to preoccupy the minds of Nigerians. N, from Port Harcourt, says civilian casualties are ‘collateral damage’, and the report itself might be a device designed to distract the military from further clamping down on Boko Haram. He appeals to the AI’s eighth Secretary General, Salil Shetty, with questions that might make people look on the issue from a different angle.

Report By Amnesty International Blackmail, Distraction
Establishing Amnesty International in July 1961 in the United Kingdom, Peter Benenson claimed he was motivated by the injustice meted out to two Portuguese students. According to him, he read about two Portuguese students from Coimbra who had been sentenced to seven years of imprisonment in Portugal for allegedly “drinking a toast to liberty”. Till date, researchers have been unable to trace the original newspaper article in question. Would I be wrong to say that the AI organisation was founded on falsehood? By the year 1980, AI had drawn more criticisms from governments. The now-defunct USSR alleged that your organisation conducted espionage; the Moroccan government denounced it as a defender of law-breakers; the Argentine government banned AI’s 1983 annual report.
It took years before the West and international organisations listed Boko Haram among the foreign terrorist organisations. Boko Haram has killed many innocent Nigerians: among them, women, children, religious worshippers. But what your organisation is interested in is the alleged abuse of human rights by our military.
Is your organisation telling us that these helpless Nigerians, now dead because of Boko Haram, did not have any human rights? Or that the Boko Haram group has the right to keep on killing innocent citizens unchallenged?
Why should your lopsided report come up now that the Nigerian military is already winning the war against Boko Haram if not to weaken and discourage our military? Where were you when Boko Haram slit the throats of innocent and helpless schoolchildren at Buni Yadi, Yobe state? Where was your organisation when Chibok girls were kidnapped by the same Boko Haram sect? Where were you when the Boko Haram sect was winning the war because we lacked sophisticated military equipment to tackle them?
When your organisation was established in 1961, why did you not deem it necessary to revisit how King Jaja of Opobo was poisoned with a cup of tea? In case you don’t know that story: when European powers designated Opobo as a British territory due to the outcome of the 1884 Berlin conference, King Jaja refused to cease taxing British traders. Henry Hamilton Johnson, a British vice consul, invited Jaja to negotiations in 1887. When Jaja arrived, the British arrested him and tried him in Accra, the then-Gold Coast. Thereafter, he was taken to London. In 1891, Jaja was granted permission to return to Opobo but died en route, allegedly poisoned with a cup of tea. Did your organisation not consider that King Jaja’s rights were abused, or did he not have any rights?
When America invaded sovereign countries like Iraq and Afghanistan, where were your reports? Where was your report when there were massacres in Odi, Bayelsa state, and Zaki Ibiam, Benue state?
The way some international organisations and some Western countries are behaving towards the fight against this deadly Boko Haram group is sending a wrong signal that Boko Haram may have international sponsors, possibly to achieve the much-expected disintegration of Nigeria, since the 2015 general elections did not serve that purpose. To me, the report, if anything, comes at the end or when all actions have been concluded. How come your report came up while our military is having an upper hand against the Boko Haram? Was the report intended to distract our military so that Boko Haram could regroup and start launching their vicious attacks on citizens the same way they did when some people claiming to be Boko Haram secretaries and chieftains deceived the immediate past government with amnesty negotiations?
Boko Haram started out by bombing churches, believing that Christians would carry out reprisal attacks on Muslims and their mosques. When that did not happen, they started bombing mosques, believing that Muslims would attack Christians. But that still failed. They are currently bombing markets and other public places, and I don’t want to believe that this recent report is aimed at dividing Nigerians along regional lines. The Igbos are already crying foul why their own Azubuike Ihejirika (the only Igbo to occupy such post since we returned to democracy in 1999) was indicted, and the Niger Deltans  are also  waiting for Kenneth Minimah to be ‘victimized’. This is because after the Odi and Zaki Ibiam massacres, the then-chief of army staff was not indicted by your organisation. I don’t want to believe that those that predicted the disintegration of Nigeria are also working for its actualisation. Some Nigerians are  beginning to believe that this AI report is aimed at either distracting the military in their final fight to exterminate the Boko Haram sect from Nigerian soil, or to further polarise Nigerians along regional lines hence actualising the much-expected disintegration.
I want AI to name one country whose military does not abuse human rights. I equally want to see those members of the military that use court injunctions to liberate a town that is held by terrorists. I will be glad if AI told me which country fights wars without civilian casualties. Watching the online commentary on how the former Iraqi leader, Saddam Hussein, was captured, I saw the American soldiers use torture to force his bodyguards into showing to his hiding place. Why didn’t the soldiers use court injunction to get where Saddam was hiding? As a history enthusiast, I know how international collaborations helped in the disintegration of the former USSR because much-touted world powers saw the union as a threat; but I still thank God that Russia, the remnant of that union, is still a threat to those that worked for the splitting of the now-defunct USSR.
It was reported that the Nigerian military officers that revolted sometime ago did so because of the lectures they received from the American intelligence officers who came to train them. Sequel to that, the immediate past government terminated that bilateral agreement between Nigeria and America. Is it not preposterous that the same US government that refused to sell sophisticated military equipment to us to fight Boko Haram was ready and willing in sending their military intelligence officers to train Nigerian soldiers to fight Boko Haram?
AI should map out the strategies on how every country’s military should carry their operations without abusing human rights. Is it possible to liberate a town held by terrorists without any civilian casualty? Also, I cannot envisage the military extracting information from a captured terrorist who disguised as a civilian with a court injunction. I still wonder how it is possible to be gentle with civilians who are either sympathetic to terrorists or help them escape and/or carry out their nefarious activities.
If AI are sincere, they should be thinking of how to bring justice to the children, pregnant women, the elderly that were murdered in cold blood by Boko Haram. What of the helpless and poor children who are now orphans due to Boko Haram activities, or innocent Nigerians who are daily sent to their early graves by Boko Haram? An Igbo adage says that one does not pursue a rat when one’s house is on fire. Dear people behind Amnesty International, I think what Nigerians want now is any report that would help us to exterminate Boko Haram. Once that is achieved, we will start addressing any alleged human rights abuse within and by our military.
On June 3, Amnesty International issued its investigative report on multiple cases of human rights abuse conducted by the Nigerian military in Nigeria’s north-east while battling terrorism. The report sparked outrage among Nigerians who claimed AI’s report presented only one side and was aimed at dissing our military’s image. The Nigerian Defence Headquarters responded in a similar vein, saying the report was a means to blackmail the Nigerian military and tarnish their image. President Muhammadu Buhari pledged to thoroughly study the report and conduct his own investigation into the matters.

An American antiquated law on abortion has not in any way encouraged abortion by victims of rape. The United States Federal Red Tape in strong terms denies all women and girls raped and impregnated by terrorist captors overseas help to get abortion.
Boko Haram: US Denies Rape Victims Abortion
Chibok Girls
A 42 year old federal law in the US forbids US aid money being used for any form of abortion as a measure for family planning.
Washington Posts reports that, during a summit, president of the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice (RCRC) and the NGO Rev, Harry Knox explains his fears on the trauma faced by these young women.
“Women are dying now. Families are being pushed further into poverty now because this care is not available to them,” said  Knox who co-hosted the summit with Centre for Health and Gender Equity.

He also argued that when Nigerian, Iraqi, Yazidi and Syrian women are systematically raped, the abortions that they might seek afterwards are not for “family planning purposes.”
As a result, women and girls raped by these notorious terrorists have to give birth to the child of their rapists.
However, there has been wide spread criticism of this law and world leaders including clerics have charged President Barrack Obama to change the helm amendment which forbids foreign aid money to fund abortion overseas unless a woman’s life is at risk.
The religious leaders which include Christian, Muslim and Jewish leaders met at St John’s Episcopal Church, directly opposite the White House to ensure that there is post-rape care which includes abortions for victims of rape.

He added: ”If you go to the these mountains around Gwoza axis you wouldn’t be able to eat meats, sand has eaten some the bodies as many bones dry up due to heat. ”
Gwoza had been liberated by the Nigerian army on the eve of presidential election in March, but the town is still under military control as no civilian is being allowed in or out.
This comes as French Prime minister, Francois Hollande told Nigerian President of France’s support in the fight against terrorism.
In April 2015, Eye witnesses claimed to have seen the Chibok girls in Gwoza but the Nigerian military has yet to ascertain where the girls are currently being held.
The six female student from Chibok community, Borno state, that escaped from the deadly terrorist group, Boko Haram, during a raid on government girls secondary school last year, have been hosted to a reception at the United States congress.

The event which happened yesterday, June 10, was an opportunity for US congresswoman, Fredrica Wilson and some of her colleagues to identify with the girls.
The congress members wore red clothing in solidarity with the girls who are still missing and held up banners with the inscriptions #BringBackOurGirls in a photo shoot.
They photo shoots were outside the Congress building where they joined other celebrities around the world to call for the safe return of the other girls as they requested their rescue.
Some of the girls are now benefiting from a scholarship programme in the US state of Oregon. The scholarship is courtesy of a Virginia-based non-profit organisation called the Jubilee Campaign in collaboration with some Nigerian activists.

The whereabouts of over 200 missing Chibok school girls have been of serious concern since the incident occurred over a year ago.
Emotions rent the scene when President Muhammadu Buhari, his wife, Aisha and the wife of the Vice President, Dolapo Osinbajo, on Friday, June 12, met with two women whose daughters are among the over 200 missing Chibok girls.
The two women, who earlier had a meeting with Aisa Buhari and the wife of the vice president were ushered into another meeting with the president at the Defence House, Abuja.

Punch reports that while they posed for photographs, the wearied women broke down in tears.
Moved by their plights, Mrs Buhari consoled the women while Mrs. Osinbajo could not hold her emotions as she shed tears.
Mrs Osinbanjo later talked about the essence of their meetings with the mothers “Hajia Aisha Buhari had, for many months, wanted to visit Chibok. She also wanted to meet with the mothers. Hajia, being a mother, met with them, held them and they cried, everybody cried. What only a mother will do is to say ‘wait, I want you to see your father and see what your father will do”
.“We were all extremely overwhelmed that at this time when the President is so busy, he had time to meet with the women from Chibok. So, today, we have had the opportunity for the President and Hajia to show that they are our father and mother, for that we are glad.”

Recently, Peter and his wife Lola Omotayo took to social media to post some controversial statements and pictures which led many to believe that their marriage might be on the verge of a collapse.

As far back as the Byzantine Empire chariot-racers, in 532 AD, (and probably since the dawn of man), rival groups and individuals have been feuding. One of the most famous, more recent rivalries was between West Virginia’s Hatfields and Kentucky’s McCoys, begun during the Civil War, and continued through several generations, resulting in many killings
Celebrities are not immune to conflict. Let’s hope these scuffling stars can eventually resolve their differences and get together, a la the descendants of the Hatfields and McCoys who organized a joint family reunion in 2000, attended by more than 5000 people.
Jay Z vs. Solange Knowles
A recent altercation was caught on video between Solange Knowles, Beyonce’s sister, and Jay Z in an elevator at the Standard Hotel following the Met Gala on May 5. Solange’s temper flared when she hears rumors Jay Z is cheating on her sister. Speculation has him doing one or more of the following: flirting with Rachel Roy, flirting with a restaurant hostess, flirting with rapper, Liv, or partying with Rihanna. Jay Z took the beating in stride.
